New York Giants news, 2/3: Odds are Giants won’t be 2021 Super Bowl champs
JR actually managed the cap really well on a year to year basis. They never had tons of room (Except the year they bought a defense…) but they were never so tight that they had to go cutting players. Getty created some really bad cap situations by trading those big contracts and escalating cap hits.
I actually don’t think every decision he made was bad. But people like to exaggerate how bad the situation he inherited was. It wasn’t really that bad.
Opinion: Enough with the Jon Jones to heavyweight talk
He couldn’t take down a guy on one leg and had less success getting Reyes down than Oezdemir the stand-up specialist did.
Stipe brought Ngannou down with low shots – hardly Jones’ MO. Curtis Blaydes can wrestle too – how’s that worked out for him against Ngannou x 2?
Big guys also invariably touch Jones up. Ngannou is not a guy you want connecting.
People spunk over Jones’ gameplanning and ‘fight IQ’ – but when has he ever genuinely had to gameplan to win? He is able to do exactly what he wants from the get go in every fight where he has the physical/athletic advantage, and when he doesn’t have that, he tends to scrape by (Santos, Gus, Reyes).
But that he was left off was hardly horseshit. Which of these players should he have beaten out for a spot?
Michael Thomas – 149 receptions, 1725 yards, 9 TD (16 games)
Julio Jones – 99 receptions, 1394 yards, 6 TD (15 games)
Chris Godwin – 86 receptions, 1333 yards, 9 TD (14 games)
Mike Evans – 67 receptions, 1157 yards, 8 TD (13 games)
Meanwhile, Golladay had 65 receptions, 1190 yards, 11 TD (16 games). And before you say he should have made it over Mike Evans, recall that the Pro Bowl teams are announced on Dec 17. At that time Evans had the same numbers, Golladay had 58 receptions, 1052 yards, 10 TD.
I’m glad he made it, but it was hardly a travesty of justice that he was left off in the first place.

So entirely fair to disagree. I am a Mahomes stan and I just didn’t see it. He wasn’t Pat Mahomes last night, he was off target, he didn’t do the things that make him so special and fun to watch. His receivers had to bail him out more than he led them into good spots.
The fact that you are making the counter argument that his receivers looking good is why he deserves it basically tells me they shouldn’t even bother anymore. Winning QB just gets it be default. It shouldn’t be that way — but it just is.

He created it with his moves. It’s easy to trash a roster and clear a bunch of space.
Getty COULD have caught some breaks. He came in with the #2 overall pick in a QB heavy draft. He used it one a running back instead of a QB or a pass rusher. He could have had Bradley Chubb on his defense. That changes the nature of the entire team. He could have had a QB, been able to clear Eli’s cap hit a year sooner, and then take a pass rusher this draft class. He could have traded back and taken an offensive lineman. You make your own luck. Lynch has done so Gettleman has not.
I hope you are correct. All it will take is a superbowl appearance in 2020 for me to agree with you.
I agree with you on one thing — I think last years roster had more wins in them but they couldn’t overcome bad coaching.
