With the Rams first preseason game in the books, the team looks to continue the momentum into the ex-Governors' Cup match-up vs. the Chiefs.

The Rams started out slow during their game with the Cowboys, but the backups (and backups' backups) ended up giving the Rams enough to eek out a win during their preseason game. How does this translate into the next week of camp?

Stock Up

WR Tyler Higbee

Higbee continues to impress. With most of the other receivers having a rather uninspired game (Looking at you Tavon), Higgles was one of the lone bright spots in the passing game. This week will be a good time to look at him with the 1st team offense and get some reps in preparation for the inevitable role he'll play during the regular season. He's going to be starting (or at least be the primary receiver in 2TE sets) if he continues to play well.

Playing against the second string is one thing, but this week the hype train can truly get rolling.

DE/OLB Ian Seau

The Rams don't have a lot of room at linebacker, but Seau certainly impressed with his limited time on the field against Dallas. This week, look to see if he has any time at special teams and how he performs against the Chiefs. His pass rushing skills may make him a highly situational player on defense, but looking good in ST when others (Chase Reynolds) fell flat would go a long way.

DE Matt Longacre

In case you missed it.

CB E.J. Gaines

He's finally back, and that's a positive sign after the weak showing from the secondary. This week will be telling as the secondary battle gets more muddled with Gaines' return.

QB Sean Mannion

Mannion, a real human, continues to display football things on the field. Things that could get him reps with the next level up (2nd string).

Stock Down

WR Nelson Spruce

That injury is huge because he isn't getting playing time. He needs time with the 2's, at least, so the staff can see how he does against competition that will likely make an NFL roster. Hopefully he can return in week three and put together a couple more impressive games.

RB Chase Reynolds

Whiffing on tackles in special teams (as a special teams expert) doesn't do you any favors when every other RB on the team looks impressive running the ball. The Rams tend to be heavy on the roster for backs, but Reynolds needs to show more, period.

C Demetrius Rhaney

Can he compete against the man of many tanks?

Finally, we can have a long, hard look at the Sam Bradford-Nick Foles trade, and come to a conclusion on just who won this deal.

The St. Louis Rams have made a habit of late of making a big enough splash through personnel decisions to consistently be in the headlines during the offseason. Last year was no different.

The Rams tradedSam Bradford to the Philadelphia Eagles for Nick Foles. The trade also saw the Rams walk away with the Eagles' 2015 NFL Draft fourth-round pick and their 2016 NFL Draft second-round pick. The Eagles took the Rams' 2015 NFL Draft fifth-round pick, and had a chance to get the Rams' 2016 third-round pick if Bradford had not taken half of the Eagles' snaps for the season.

The Rams used that fourth-round pick on offensive lineman Andrew Donnal. The Eagles used the fifth-round pick as trade bait to move up to pick 47th overall in the second round and draft CB Eric Rowe. Donnal is in a backup role, and Rowe played in all nickel packages and eventually became a full-time starter.

But what about the quarterbacks? Surely we have to discuss the very reason for this trade being a "blockbuster" trade.

In the 14 games Sam Bradford played, the Eagles went 7-7. Bradford set new career highs in completion percentage (65%), yards (3,725 yards) and yards per game (266). In fact if Bradford had played all 16 games, he likely would have eclipsed the 4,000 yard mark by a couple of hundred yards. Unfortunately as we all know too well, he had trouble staying healthy after taking a monstrous hit against the Miami Dolphins, and suffered a concussion and sprained his left shoulder.

Nick Foles started 11 games for the Rams, leading the Rams to a 4-7 record. He finished the season with 2,052 yards, a 7:10 TD/Int ratio and a 56% completion percentage. The games he missed were not a result of injury but performance-related instead. He was actually outplayed by QB Case Keenum, who Jeff Fisher has just endorsed as his starting quarterback entering the 2016 season.

The Rams lost a handful of games off of perhaps six or seven key plays. It can be argued that with a slightly more accurate quarterback, those extra plays could have been made resulting in a different outcome of the season. This isn't a hint towards Bradford should have stayed, but more of how would things have been different if a switch to Keenum have happened sooner, maybe even after that Packers game (arguably the worst game by a Rams QB in the last 6 years).

We can play the game of what if all day. The fact of the matter is Nick Foles was horrid and played terribly with not many excuses to back him up. Had Keenum looked equally as bad, there would have been a case to be made, no pun intended.

Interestingly enough, when I wrote about why I thought Foles would fail, I alluded to inconsistencies in his game that were being overlooked. A struggle with consistent accuracy and decision making was sure to doom him.

Even more interesting than that, was the vote by the fans of what a failed season for Foles would be;

Needless to say, it's probably even more disappointing that the yards Foles threw for in reality was almost exact to the one voted on, but was done in four less games. Ouch!!!

The Rams will have the 44th pick in the second round of the 2016 NFL draft, thanks to the trade with the Eagles. Unless they can turn that into a rookie pro bowl pick, they have lost this trade.

In my opinion, the Eagles won this trade outright. The Eagles got a starting corner and solid QB play. The Rams got a backup G/T and a backup QB. In my bold season predictions piece, I said Sam Bradford would outplay Nick Foles and it won't even be close. Unfortunately, Foles' performance made that look less like a bold prediction and more of a fact.

But as usual I will leave the final word up to you all with a vote...

The fifth-year DE has battled injuries for much of the year racking up just 13 tackles and five sacks. From 2012-14, the two-time Pro Bowler and 2013 All-Pro defensive line leader was the star on the Rams' stellar defensive line totaling 103 tackles and a whopping 40 sacks. Whether because of Quinn or not, the defense struggled much more in his absence than with him around. Despite the presence of talents along the line and a windfall of localized draft picks, the Rams defense ranks 12th in points surrendered and 19th in yards allowed.

Rational me

Ok, obviously without any kind of timestamp on this, it's just silly Schefter. What is "at some point?" I mean, that could certainly mean when he was drafted. And that doesn't really suggest any kind of likelihood in terms of immediate action in the near future. Draft season is different. You've got picks. You have to explore possibilities. But mid-season management is something altogether different.

This is probably just Schefter speaking extemporaneously and citing some past associations as a generalized effect of Manziel's standing from a skill set perspective as he continues to lose favor among the Browns and head coach Mike Pettine.

Internet me

THE ST. LOUIS RAMS ARE GOING TO SIGN JOHNNY FOOTBALL IN A MOVE OF OBVIOUS DESPERATION. CLEARLY, THE COACHING STAFF ARE FURIOUS AT NICK FOLES' INABILITY TO MOVE THE BALL DOWNFIELD AND FORCED CASE KEENUM TO SELF-CONCUSS IN ORDER TO PUT THIS BALL IN MOTION. EXPECT MANZIEL TO SIGN WITHIN THE NEXT 48 HOURS AND SAVE JEFF FISHER'S JOB AND BY THE WAY WE ARE NOT MATHEMATICALLY OUT OF THE PLAYOFFS JUST YET JUST SAYING.

(UPDATED at 12:44pm ET)

Schefter made the comments in reference to an article he wrote regarding Manziel possibly heading to the Dallas Cowboys on the Dan Patrick Show (embedded below), but here's the core pullquote regarding the Rams:

When Johnny Manziel was coming out, the St. Louis Rams did an awful lot of background work into him. Considered drafting him. Wisely went with Aaron Donald instead. The Rams have not solved their quarterback issues, so the Rams become a potential landing spot...

...Now again, you're just speaking to people and we're adding one and one and it equals two, but those are the three spots that make the most sense for Johnny Manziel after the season: Dallas, St. Louis, San Francisco. Somebody will roll the dice.

What do Broncos fans think of the Rams' move to sign Wes Welker? I asked Mile High Report's sadaraine.

Yesterday's signing of WR Wes Welker to replace Stedman Bailey during his four-game suspension for non-performance enhancing drugs (read: smokin weed) was met with an immediate flood of questions:

What can Wes Welker bring to the Rams mid-2015?

What did he leave the Broncos missing?

And should we be surprised that Wes Welker is playing professional football again after perhaps up to a dozen concussions in his 11-year NFL career?

To get a Broncos fans' side of those questions, I caught up with sadaraine from Mile High Report, the SB Nation community for fans of the Denver Broncos.

So the drop off from Patriots Wes Welker to Broncos Wes Welker was pretty dramatic. Still, he was productive for you guys in general, catching 122 passes for 1,242 yards along with 12 touchdowns, 10 of which came in that first season with you guys. What was he still doing well by the end of 2014? What value did he still provide? What are fair expectations for Rams fans to have of what he can bring to the roster?

He was still running routes well at the end of 2014, but not quite as fast as we had seen in 2013. Also the injury risk was such a huge deal. He had a string of concussions in the season and really didn't see much action because of the huge risk. There really wasn't much value to be had because I honestly don't think Manning would target him because of the health risk.

I don't pretend to be a doctor, but I have some serious doubts that Wes is magically all better and can just dial up his old self. He made his living going across the middle and making tough catches in traffic. Can he still do that? Maybe, but if I were watching I'd be lying if I said that I wouldn't be holding my breath every time I saw the ball headed his direction.

In my perfect world, you'd expect Wes to come in on big passing situations and find a way to give you some good 3rd down conversions while doing everything he can to avoid the big hit. Maybe a few hundred yards and a TD or two. We'll skip my nightmare scenario.

What have you guys missed from him if anything this season? Obviously, Peyton's his own exhibit to study, but - in your opinion - has he missed Welker in any obvious form?

I don't miss anything from him honestly. The risk from everything I've read far outweighs the benefits of having him on the field. The one thing I'm sure the team misses is having him in the locker room. He's such a fun guy and a great personality. There's no way he didn't bolster the spirits of the team when he was with us.

Yes, Peyton has missed what Welker was in 2014: A deadly 3rd WR target when we are in passing situations and have our 11 personnel on the field. Welker is the best on the planet in the slot and our offense appears to be searching for a weapon that is even half what Welker was.

Are you surprised that he's back in the league? Did you think 2014 was the end of Wes Welker's career?

Yes and yes. I have a family and have a very very hard time reconciling the whole concussion risk issue for him in the long term vs playing another year in the short term. It isn't my life in the end, but football while irreplaceable is still just a game. There is no game on this planet worth my ability to think, reason, and function as a fully capable human being.

Thanks to sadaraine for the time.

As Schefter reports, any appeal has been withdrawn. That would certainly explain why the Rams worked out three veteran WRs today as possible replacements on the roster.

This isn't the first run-in with the new policy rules for the Rams this year. RB Trey Watts was suspended for four games initially in May before running afoul of them again last week and facing a season-long suspension for his second violation.

A third year pro, Bailey was a third-round pick in the Rams' 2013 NFL Draft joining fellow West Virginia Mountaineer Tavon Austin to head to St. Louis. He has 12 receptions on 23 targets for 182 yards and a touchdown, scored against the Arizona Cardinals in Week 4, this season.

(UPDATED at 4:21pm ET)

The NFL has made the following official statement regarding Bailey's suspension:

Stedman Bailey of the St. Louis Rams has been suspended without pay for the team’s next four games for violating the NFL Policy and Program for Substances of Abuse.

Bailey’s suspension begins immediately. He will be eligible to return to the Rams’ active roster on Monday, December 7 following the team’s December 6 game against the Arizona Cardinals.

Clearly, the Rams are displeased with the current production out of their wide receivers as a trio of veterans will try out for the team today.

Per ESPN's Adam Caplan, the St. Louis Rams will hold workouts for veteran WRs Wes Welker, Vincent Brown and Hakeem Nicks today.

Welker, 34 years old, rose to prominence with the New England Patriots from 2007 to 2012. Last season with the Denver Broncos, he caught 49 passes for 464 yards and two touchdowns.

Brown was a third-round pick for the San Diego Chargers in the 2011 NFL Draft. Just 26, he was a promising young player, though he flamed out last year with the Oakland Raiders.

Nicks flashed early in his career with the New York Giants. At 27 years of age, he likely has football left in him, though he caught just 28 passes for 405 yards last year with the Indianapolis Colts.

The Rams previously worked out a crop of young WRs earlier this season, including Nick Toon. Toon was ultimately signed and is currently stashed on the practice squad.
