The Rams' head coach had some new lines to explain away the loss to Arizona and offered updates on injured players DE Chris Long and WR Brian Quick.

(Opening Statement)
"We had a chance obviously to look at it and it really hasn’t changed since last night. Just disappointed for the players and all the good things that they did, to let things slip away with seven minutes left to go in the game. I thought we did a lot of good things defensively against the run, pressure on (Cardinals QB) Carson (Palmer), the tipped balls, the interception, those kinds of things. It was a winning effort except for the one deep ball. Offensively, we knew we were going to have our hands full with protection and the run game, but we still put ourselves in position to have a chance. The three turnovers obviously, clearly, at the end were the difference in the ballgame. I thought we matched pretty well with them from a special teams standpoint. So, as we have said too many times, too often, the 24-hour rule’s in effect and we’re going to move on. We’ve got a huge challenge this week. Players know exactly what happened yesterday, and they’ve got a perspective, so we’re moving forward."

(On how he felt about the penalty on TE Lance Kendricks after watching it on tape)
"I think they’re going to call that half the time. It’s within the rules. It was just unfortunate timing for us. It was a great hit, great block. He’s blocking someone that’s shorter than he is and he has the responsibility...the blocker, in Lance’s case, has the responsibility, it’s all in his hands to avoid hitting him in the head and neck area. The defender was ducking, Lance was ducking. It just happened."

(On if the call was made because of where on the body Kendricks made contact or because it was a blindside block)
"A blindside block only applies to the head and neck area. The defensive player gets defenseless player protection with respect to a blindside block. The blindside is coming back towards your own end line and/or parallel. The parallel part went in a couple of years ago. I’d say it’s the correct call. You don’t like it. His other option in that case was to go low or lower his target area and you surely don’t want to see guys going low in those instances because of the potential for injury. Really we’ve got the ball on the 4-yard line. Instead we’re backed up on the 35."

(On if he’s upset at Kendricks for committing the penalty)
"Oh no, no. Lance is playing good football right now. You can’t fault anybody. That’s just the unfortunate part of some of the things that happened. Now, those are all...this is a player safety issue and that’s why this rule went in. So, I can see why it was called."

(On if the ‘parallel’ distinction means that blocks like the one Kendricks delivered are illegal even if the player being blocked can see it coming)

As we have said too many times, too often, the 24-hour rule’s in effect and we’re going to move on. We’ve got a huge challenge this week. Players know exactly what happened yesterday, and they’ve got a perspective, so we’re moving forward.- Rams HC Jeff Fisher

"Yeah, if the blocker is blocking back towards his own end line or is blocking parallel to the end line, then it potentially is a foul. There were a number of hits that the (competition) committee looked at a number of years ago, you really couldn’t tell if it was back towards the end line or parallel, so they added parallel to it just to add to player safety. Now, the defender turned, so it happened pretty quickly. If the defender is just running and you’re lining them up, I don’t think it’s called. It’s just one of those things."

(On if he’s considered making a change at quarterback)
"No, (QB Austin Davis) didn’t have his best half. He missed some opportunities. He made a couple bad decisions and he had trouble seeing at times. The last couple of weeks, he’s thrown four interceptions, but we’re going to hang in there. He’s working real hard, so we’ll see where it goes."

(On if protection has been an issue lately or if Davis has been holding onto the ball too long)
"Well, that’s the case at times. Give the defense credit. There’s going to be an unblocked rusher and you have to get rid of the football. The quarterback’s got to get rid of the football. He’s got to see that. Austin, he can’t take a sack in field goal range. After the series where we had the penalty, we’re looking at a 53-yard field goal. He’s got to throw the ball away. It’s a three-man rush. So, it’s a combination, a quarterback combination. We had a one-on-one at a tight end position where we had an issue. We’ll credit the defense. We had a couple pass rush games where we got soft, but the ball has to come out."

(On if Davis is starting to get frustrated)
"The position’s hard to play. This defense has done this to a lot of quarterbacks, good quarterbacks. He’s disappointed, but that’s part of playing the position. You’re going to…sometimes you’re going to have a hard Sunday as a quarterback. He’s disappointed in what happened, but he’ll bounce back."

(On if he personally senses Davis is frustrated with his performance)
"I’d choose a better word. I don’t know what you’re saying frustrated, yeah. Disappointed, whatever, he’s not pleased with what happened yesterday, we’ll say that. He’ll bounce back."

(On if receivers are getting consistent enough separation)
"We had opportunities. We had a number of opportunities for some significant catch and runs yesterday."

(On how OL Joe Barksdale has done this season despite his challenges against Kansas City)
"Kansas City was tough. That was a tough matchup for him, but he’s battling. He’s playing well against the run. I think we just started talking about him in Kansas City because he had a hard time. Prior to that he was playing solid football. He’s battling. He and (OL) Davin (Joseph) are working as best they can together and communicating. It’s going to appear soft at times. That happens against good defenses."

(On LB Alec Ogletree’s improvements since the Seattle game and how he’s come on)
"He has. He’s played good football. We’ve made a concerted effort to get him behind the ball, (Defensive Coordinator Greg) Coach Williams has. That’s where he’s best, just running and slipping blocks and taking on blocks. He’s been much more productive. Good pressure. Ball skills, hands-on. When he caught the, one he anticipated, read the formation, recognized the route that was coming and put himself in a position to make another play. He’s playing much better in the last two weeks."

(On if Ogletree got teased for not getting by Cardinals’ QB Carson Palmer)
"Yeah, I’m sure he did on the plane last night. Carson did have an angle. Still, he can gather and let Carson run by and go back inside. It was a 44-yard return, maybe the outcome’s different."

(On the lack of offensive production over the last five games and if it’s ascribed to good defenses)
"It is. It’s all about that in our opinion. We talked about it as a staff. We had in the last six games, four of them have been on the road, each team’s playing good defense. We just got to become more consistent running the football, protecting. I think the big thing right now is our third-down. We converted one third-down yesterday and that doesn’t give you a chance to accumulate the touches that you want."

(On the play in the secondary with the return of both CB Janoris Jenkins and CB Trumaine Johnson)
"Well, ‘Jenks’ came back and played well, made tackles. Felt pretty good today, so we assume that he should be close to 100 percent this week. ‘Tru’s’ second game back, he was affective. He was recognizing things. He was tackling. He was doing things. We missed (CB) Lamarcus (Joyner). We had to change things. Fortunately, we got Janoris back so we can move (CB) E.J. (Gaines) in the nickel. E.J. went inside and played inside. Tells you a lot about him, he’s gone from outside to inside just during the course of a game. Then of course, we packaged up with (S) Mark (Barron) and I thought that was productive for us. Lamarcus will clearly be questionable this week. I don’t necessarily know…I can’t really predict where (CB) Marcus (Roberson) is, so we’re down in numbers. I think one would assume we would expand the safety package with Mark."

(On how Gaines played when he was moved into the nickel spot)
"He was fine. He got his hands on the ball. Didn’t have any problems…we didn’t have to scale down the third down package per se. He prepares mentally for it and thought he plugged in nicely."

(On Barron’s impact on the game yesterday)
"He did, the sacks, the pressure, the contact. On the first completion in the zone coverage was a huge hit. Even, I think, you get a sense for his physical stature out there. There was a screen pass and the guard was out in space and he took the guard on. Most DBs would be tumbling or go low. He took the guard on high bounced off and got an assist. He’s a physical player."

(On if there’s any chance DE Chris Long practices this week)
"There’s a chance he’ll get on the field. We’re going to discuss it tomorrow with him. He has a 21-day window to practice once he steps on the field (before he counts against the roster). There’s a chance that we’ll have him back on the field this week."

(On the status of WR Brian Quick and LT Jake Long surgeries)
"Yes, both of them had surgeries. Jake is rehabbing, doing well. Brian, I encouraged Brian to come out to practice. It’s going to be probably another week or two before he comes out. There was significant damage to his shoulder. However, he will recover 100 percent, but it’s going to be a slow process. It’s going to be a training camp thing."

(On if there was more damage to Quick’s shoulder than they anticipated)
"Yeah, he did just about everything you possibly can to the shoulder. You talk about rotator cuff, labrum, bicep tendon, just everything. It was a successful surgery, a successful procedure, but he’s going to be immobilized for quite some time."

(On giving up a return touchdowns)
"Well, we’ve had eight. We’ve had one on teams and seven on offense, four interceptions and three fumbles. It’s hard regardless of who you’re playing to overcome a gift, a score like that. Credit them for creating the plays. Our ratio is eight-to-two right now. We’re not getting those scores on defense. It’s hard to overcome, especially yesterday with the two and the additional turnover."

Austin Davis' 15 minutes of fame and glory are clearly over. Anyone who puts their faith in Sam Bradford is foolish at this point. Where will the Rams find their starting QB?

In the words of our very own 3k: "Welp. That Happened."

I'll tack an "again" onto that statement. Again, the Rams disappointed us. Again, they collapsed. Again, catastrophic errors doomed them. Again, they lost a very winnable game. I could go on and on.

I'm usually the one that tries to find a reason for the loss, to analyze and try to armchair GM my way into believing that there is still hope. But at what point is this just the Rams identity?

Unfortunately, the Rams are little more than a 'tough out' in the 2014 NFL season, confirming what pundits were saying in the preseason: the Rams just aren't ready for primetime yet. In the words of Dennis Green: "they are who we thought they were!"

As a community, let's collectively dream for a second. How good could this team be if they just had a competent QB who could stay on the field? Because lets be honest with ourselves, it doesn't matter how good a defense is....you're not going to win many games when you're only averaging 310 yards per game.

My current Man Crush isn't on a player, coach, trainer, or anyone currently affiliated with the Rams franchise. I'm Man Crushing on the idea of a true Franchise QB. A player that can take this team to the promise land and provide stability to a position that has been - in my opinion - in flux since Kurt Warner was ran out of town.

So, let's put our rose-colored glasses and thoughts of salvaging the season away for a moment, and take stock of potential QBs that the Rams could acquire for next year (sigh).

Free Agents: Not much to see here

Mostly stop-gap options here. The only names on this list that even remotely resemble a long-term answer at QB are Brian Hoyer and Ryan Mallett. And lets face it, if Hoyer leads the Browns to the playoffs he won't be available. And until Mallett actually show something on the field for the Texans, I'm not inclined to hand the reigns over to him. And again... if he shows something, the Texans won't be likely to let him walk via UFA.

College QBs: No Perfect Options for Rams

Wow, so that intro got a little out of control... my bad guys.

Welcome back to Man Crush Monday! Let's start with a rundown of the infamous Mel Kiper's QB Rankings for the 2015 draft. (in$ider)

1. *Marcus Mariota, Oregon
2. **Jameis Winston, Florida St.
3. Bryce Petty, Baylor
4. *Brett Hundley, UCLA
5. *Connor Cook, Michigan St.
6. Sean Mannion, Oregon St.
7. *Dak Prescott, Mississippi St.
8. Cody Fajardo, Nevada
9. Shane Carden, East Carolina
10. Taylor Heinicke, Old Dominion

The obvious change here from the rankings I put out to start the season is Winston's drop from No. 1. I've been pretty clear that his off-field decision-making will be a major concern for evaluators, and it's reflected here. Mariota has seen a ton of pressure behind a shell of an offensive line, but is still completing 70 percent of his throws and hasn't been picked off once. Prescott has work to do as a thrower, but he certainly has caught the eye of scouts. Heinicke is a sleeper to watch -- he has impressed me in the few games I've been able to go through.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
For the purposes of this discussion, I'm going to cut that list of 10 down to the 4 college QBs that I think have the potential to be 'franchise' QBs.
4: Bryce Petty, Baylor
Petty has the arm talent and size that you want in an NFL QB, but is a beneficiary of the wide-open Baylor offensive scheme. I think that, with a little seasoning, Petty could be a serviceable - albeit limited - QB in the NFL. He could be a NFL QB, but he would never be an elite QB. In time, he wouldn't lose you games, but he wouldn't win you many either.
3: Jameis Winston, Florida State
Winston has all of the measurables and QB tools that scouts drool over. He keeps his composure on the field and has let several dramatic comebacks this year. However, I simply can't place him higher on this list with his complete inability to stay out of trouble off the field. This kid has more red flags than Adam "Pacman" Jones had when entering the league. His latest scandal involves point shaving.... which could spell the end of his football career. At this point, he has the talent, but I wouldn't want him as the face of the franchise.
2) Brett Hundley, UCLA
Snippet from the CBS Sports scouting report for Hundley:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

"On the surface, Hundley's skill-set seems every bit as tantalizing as Oregon's Marcus Mariota or Florida State's Jameis Winston. To leapfrog these two as the elite quarterback prospect in the country, however, Hundley will need to improve in the critical subtleties of the quarterback position - reading defenses and ball placement.

COMPARES TO: Randall Cunningham, ex-Eagles: Hundley possesses a combination of size, athleticism, grace and arm strength reminiscent of the former Pro Bowler Cunningham."

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
When reading that, I thought that most of the negatives could be chalked up to experience. Subtleties take time to learn just by definition. Hundley would cost less draft capitol than Mariota or Winston, but would also take longer to develop as an NFL QB.
There is definitely some give and take with Hundley, but he may be the best option for the Rams when the 2015 NFL draft rolls around because....
1) Marcus Mariota, Oregon
Mariota will likely be the #1 pick. While Jameis arguably has the most talent of the group, Mariota is the most efficient of the group. The MMQB ran a showcase on Mariota earlier this season, and he is the total package. He has a career 7.7 TD-INT ratio and career 66% completion rate. That's pretty eye popping compared to the Rams recent QB production.
The only downside for the Rams is that they won't be in a position to draft him in May. True to Jeff Fisher's history, they will win from 6-8 games and pick somewhere from 8-12 in the first round. To move up to #1 to pick Mariota would likely cost at least a 1st and two 2nd round picks...and that's a bare minimum.
There are concerns about his size, but he's only 21. He's bound to add a little weight to his frame as he grows into his body so I'm not horribly concerned about it. While he's at the top of my Rams QB dream list, it is unlikely that he will fall to the Rams in the draft.
Pick Your Poison
This draft lacks the Andrew Luck type QB. Every QB has their flaws. With Winston, you wonder if he could mature. Petty plays in a very QB friendly system. Mariotta would cost the Rams a fortune in draft capitol, is small, and may be an injury liablilty. Hundley may have the least amount of question marks, but will take some time to develop.
So, fellow armchair GMs, I ask you... who would you like to see as the Rams QB next year?
The response to the report card following the Rams' 31-14 implosion in Arizona? You're grounded.
QB -
Two interceptions, a fumble and a litany of examples of what not to do under pressure. Don't worry. This isn't all on Austin Davis.
RB -
An improved grade as last week for, relatively, the same performance plus some receiving work. Of course the bigger issue was the lack of volume. The Rams' commitment to a pass-heavy offense that doesn't move the ball well is...interesting.
WR -
On a day when Davis needed his primary target to win, too often they just didn't. The pressure meant he wasn't going to have a ton of time to go through progressions, though he did a terrible job of it nonetheless, but Davis NEEDED his wide receivers yesterday. They came up short. Please send your reason the Rams hate to use Tavon Austin even after he gets off to a nice start to turfshowtimes@gmail.com.
TE -
Jared Cook's explosion up the seam was the highlight of the day. Lance Kendricks had a plus day marred by a horrendous penalty call that negated a huge play. There's an argument to be made that this is the best unit on the offense. Blocking wasn't beautiful, but there were worse in that area...
O-line -
Just horrendous. This isn't a personnel issue either. The only difference between yesterday's line and the week one unit was Greg Robinson in for Jake Long at left tackle. This team doesn't have excuses here. These are the guys they brought in. They decided to re-sign Rodger Saffold after the Oakland debacle. They decided to draft Greg Robinson at #2 overall. You could easily claim the line lost the game for the Rams yesterday, and it's a legitimate rebuke of the entire staff that the line they've built over three years was this bad yesterday. Hard to expect them to build other units to a sufficient degree if they can't get this to a playable level.
D-line -
Had some big moments, but left wanting in some of Arizona's. I might be a bit unfair here given how well they anchored the run defense, but when Arizona really started clicking in the passing game, they needed to make more of an impact.
LB -
No reason not to give the linebackers the same grade as the line. Perfectly clean in the running game. Enough big plays to have highlights to lean on, but they were a bit slow in closing the middle of the field on the Cards slightly too often. I guess worth pointing out here that the defense had a solid game overall. Ok fine, give em both B's.
Secondary -
The passing totals weren't pretty as Arizona finished with 307 passing yards, but they supported the run game well. There's at least a backable identity with the defense and their physicality. Holding an opponent to 17 offensive points isn't shameful in the least. It's not great either.
Special Teams - Meh
Dumb penalty. Unfair penalty. A lot of nothing everywhere else. Benny Cunningham has been a revelation this season in delivering positive field position on kick returns with uncanny consistency. Do the Rams wanna try to block on punt returns to give Tavon Austin a chance at a single return this year? Nah? Ok.
Coaching -
Brian Schottenheimer's resistance to shortening the offense to deal with the pass rush for much of the game was inexplicable. Tavon Austin is a unique talent the Rams are uninterested in committing to despite having traded up to draft him 8th overall. The lack of player development is stunting multiple position units. With nothing to play for in 2014, that's going to be the major concern throughout the next two months.
A tough loss to Arizona, in a game that was eminently winnable. A lot of positives to take out of this game. The Rams are a young, talented team, one getting better as the season wears on.
The "Toxic Differential" sure came to light in the second half of the Rams' loss to the Arizona Cardinals. A 48-yard passing big play to John Brown in the fourth quarter resulted in an Arizona TD. Two late turnovers by QB Austin Davis sealed the Rams fate.
The expression "toxic differential" was coined by former NFL coach Brian Billick. Billick was the head coach of the Baltimore Ravens for 9 seasons, and led them to a Super Bowl victory in the 2000 season.
From an article by Brian Billick for NFL.com in November, 2011:
"People are constantly looking for the right combination of stats to indicate the probable success of a team. What are the key factors to winning? Is it sacks, third-down conversions, first-down efficiency, the ability to run the ball and stop the run, total passing yards? All are important, but none are a precise indicator of success."
"Beginning in 1998, when I was the Vikings' offensive coordinator, I used a formula that I called the "toxic differential" as the best barometer for our team's success. Simply stated, the toxic differential is the correlation between turnovers and explosive plays."
The roster is updated to reflect all transactions as of 11:00 pm, Sunday, November 9. After a huge week of roster transactions, the Rams were strangely quiet this past week. For once, the roster remained unchanged. When Chris Long returns, it will require the Rams to do a bit of roster tweaking.
The Rams were blown out in yet another second half, this one a 21-0 final 30 minutes, that ends the Rams' hopes for anything meaningful in 2014.
We can all fill in the blanks.
They're big enough.
This is a team that had a 14-10 lead going into the 4th quarter. The Cardinals had just lost their QB, a wily veteran who the had just signed to a contract extension. The Rams had shown enough of everything to suggest they'd be in position to close this game down and get a win.
They didn't. They failed in spectacular fashion. And just like that, the 2014 season becomes an exercise in killing time and figuring out where we'll draft in the 2015 NFL Draft.
One thing I'd say? I'm sad for yall who lean on excuses. Who point at the refs as the main reason the Rams lost this game. Who point to Austin Davis' poor play, a QB who couldn't make the roster in 2013 but is the best we can do in 2014, and don't blame Les Snead and Jeff Fisher.
It's all good. We'll be here next year. And if the past three years are any indication, it'll be Fisher, Snead, Williams and Schottenheimer manning the key spots convincing us that Sam Bradford is finally healthy and ready to go. And some of yall will buy it in bigger margins than you did going into 2014.
This isn't even a football season anymore. It's just a mirror. Take a look.
The Rams are giving as good as they're getting in Phoenix with a small lead at halftime.
That was the kind of half the Rams were built for.
Work the ground game and Tavon Austin. Run the short offense to open up the seam and sidelines. Play strong defense and contain the passing game to the middle of the field.
There were some issues. The offense looked really incapable for a stretch as QB Austin Davis struggled to deal with pressure, as his primary reads weren't open and OC Brian Schottenheimer wasn't scheming for the pressure. That changed on the TD drive though as he had multiple releases that softened up the linebackers just long enough to hit Jared Cook streaking through the seam for a huge TD.
Defensively, it's the same blueprint for the Cardinals. Bring pressure. Cover deep and on the sides. Force Palmer to work the middle. When he does, close it down. It's worked well enough over the years, and it's working today.
Now, it's just a matter of replicating those 30 minutes to get the win.
The 3-5 Rams head to Arizona hoping to hang on to optimism of the 2014 season.
Last gasps. The Rams are clinging to the last vestiges of optimism that carried through the preseason.
Sitting a 3-5, the Rams are at the bottom of the NFC West needing a big win over divisional foes Arizona today to keep pace with the middle of the NFC. It's going to require a serious effort. The Cardinals, at 7-1 and leading the way in the NFC, haven't dropped any easy games this year. The lone blemish on their record was a drubbing courtesy of Peyton Manning and the Broncos who are capable of providing such to just about every team in the NFL.
Specifically for the Rams, it's likely going to require an order of offense greater than what they've shown the last two weeks. Combined between the Kansas City and San Francisco contests, Austin Davis went 28/49 for 265 yards for 2 TDs and 3 INTs. That's not going to cut it.
So it's another chance to prove the character of this team. A week ago similarly up against the same wall, the Rams pulled out a gritty win in San Francisco.
An equal result today might be enough to turn the tide and put the Rams on the right path for perhaps the first time this season...
