Should he stay or should he go?

Jake Long was back at his old stomping grounds this weekend. After leaving St. Louis, Long returned to Miami and was at the Dolphins' headquarters listening to his old team's new pitch. He is now deciding between the Rams and the Dolphins.

Offers from the Rams and Dolphins are reportedly very similar, according to the NFL Network. It could come down to the details of the deal and personal preference.

Both offers are probably a bit of a disappointment to Long. He was reportedly seeking something in the neighborhood of $11 million per year. He made more than $12 million last season on the last year of his rookie deal. Two seasons marred by injuries that hurt his Pro Bowl-level of play, a glut of tackles available and a market squeezing free agents are probably giving Long a culture shock, exposing the gulf in perceived value and reality.

He's probably going to have to settle for something around $8 million per season, though the annual average value of NFL contracts matters much less than how the deal is structured. Long might be looking at an incentive-laden contract, given his injury history or maybe something with less guaranteed money than he wants.

We'll know soon enough, surely?

Steven Jackson's signing with the Falcons officially ushers the end of an era. What will the Rams do now at the running back position?

Folks around this neck of the woods have known for a while that Steven Jackson would not be back in a blue and gold uniform. Yet, when news struck that the St. Louis Rams all-time rushing yards leader signed with the Atlanta Falcons, it still stung a bit.

Yes, I wil miss seeing Steven don the golden horns. Like I have said before, he and Marshall Faulk are the only Rams ball carriers I know. I am accustomed to great running back play. It can be said differently about receiver play post-Bruce and Holt, but that's another post.

What made it easy to transition away from Faulk was that the Rams had Jackson already in place. The team and the fans knew SJ was able to carry the team. This time around, replacing Jackson has taken a different route. The team's front office surely has a plan, but the fans definitely do not know what is up their sleeves.

Sure, last year's rookie backs – second-rounder Isaiah Pead and seventh-rounder Daryl Richardson – figure to be in the mix. Their presence, as a matter of fact, made SJax expendable. But, at the same time, neither player showed that they had the chops to take the carry on the torch without missing a step. Richardson is a fast, one-cut and go runner. Pead never really got anything rolling for him. Nevertheless, coach Fisher is confident in his two running backs, and the Rams are moving forward.

What is yet to be seen is if Fisher & Co. will look to bring in another option to the backfield. Jackson was a beast of a running back. At 6'2 240 pounds, he was the type of ball carrier that trucked through defenders. Pead (5'11, 197 lbs) and Richardson (5'10) definitely do not fit that mold. Do the Rams pick up a bruising RB? The team has a big back in the form of Terrance Ganaway (6'0, 240 lbs), but he didn't have a single carry during the season. I'd consider him a question mark right now.

Drafting a back is an option. Some have mocked Alabama's Eddie Lacy to the Rams in the first round, but is that to early? We have seen teams have success with backs drafted in the latter rounds. Another thing to consider is Fisher's lofty praise of Pead. One would assume Isaiah would at least get an opportunity to show what he's got.

What would y'all do?

Steven Jackson owns the hearts of an entire generation of Rams fans.

Steven Jackson is the reason I'm a Rams fan, and an entire generation of Rams fans most likely feel the same way. Not all of us are old enough to have witnessed great Rams of old. I wasn't alive to see Eric Dickerson, Nolan Cromwell, Jack Youngblood or Deacon Jones. And the Greatest Show On Turf exploded onto the scene when I was only 13 and was over in a flash.

Steven Jackson was the first Rams star who was a mainstay year in and year out for me. Steven was the face of the franchise and the glint of hope in this Rams fans' heart. After every season, his play seemed to be the only positive thing I could reflect on. And as failure after failure passed, Steven endured. He never winced nor complained to the media. He never asked for a trade or more money. He was the epitome of a team player. I looked to Steven to see how I should conduct myself on the football field.

I started playing varsity football in 2004 and my dad, a Bears fan, always taught me to be humble and work hard for everything. Although he was a Bears fan, my father always made sure I was watching Steven. Watching how Steven Jackson went about his business helped show me how a true man handles failure and success. Steven embodies the best of the NFL. He isn't a diva and he doesn't "make it rain." He was my football role model. So once I heard of Steven leaving the Rams I began wondering if he had as large of an impact on others as he did on me.

Recently I asked people on twitter what their favorite SJax memory was and the amount of unique responses amazed me.

Free Agency-Fantasy Football Impact Steven Jackson and more

As we have done all week I will continue to look at free agency from a fantasy football point of view, with that set, let's get started.

Steven Jackson - He signed a 3 year deal today with only 4 million guaranteed. The interesting thing I find is he wanted to be the "bell cow" but Atlanta will continue to utilize Jacquizz Rodgers so I see a 2/3 for Jackson and 1/3 for Rodgers. Jackson has always struggled inside the 10 so I will be curious to see f he perform better with a top passing attack around him. I can see Jackson getting around 1100 total yards with around 7 Td's, but I would be cautious as a few Rb's have continued to play well once hitting 30 especiallly with the amount of touches Jackson has had in the past 9 years.

Wes Welker - He took less money to go to the Broncos rather than the Titans who is a better fantasy spot for his talents. As for his fantasy outlook, his numbers will go down, there are just too many big play weapons on the Broncos but I can see 75 catches for 850 yards and around 5 Td's, basically a Wr3 who will get way overdrafted.

Leon Washington - He should elevate the Pats defense and make them a top 7 team with his return abilities.

Kevin Ogletree - He had a great breakout game and little else and will slide into a non producticve WR3 for the Buccaneers.

Matt Cassel - He is now the backup QB for the Vikings and still not a fantasy factor even with a Ponder injury.

Danny Amendola - He was the backup plan for the Pats and if healthy he should get 5-6 catches a game for around 50-60 yards. I think he will be over drafted in fantasy leagues for those expecting him to replicate Welker's numbers but a QB/WR connection like that takes time. I will say his totals will be 70 catches for 800 yards and 3 TD's.

James Casey - He looks to be a great fit fr the Eagles and they are going t use him in the Aaron Hernandez role but of course the QB getting him the ball is an issue. He has great hands and sneaky quick speed, I am projecting 70 catches for 700 yards and 5 TD's and a middle TE1 in fantasy drafts.

Thanks for reading!

The Rams said goodbye to a franchise legend on Thursday.

The St. Louis Rams officially said goodbye to a legend on Thursday when the franchise's all-time rushing leader signed a three-year deal with the Atlanta Falcons. Rams owner Stan Kroenke issued a statement thanking Jackson for his years with the franchise, where he spent the first nine years of his career.

"For nearly a decade, Steven Jackson served as an inspiration for his St. Louis Rams teammates and our fans as he became our franchise's all-time leading rusher. Off the field, his generosity and unselfishness improved the lives of many families in the St. Louis community. We will always be thankful for his contributions to our team and region and wish him success moving forward."

A classy move by the Rams and their owner, a nice touch for saying adios to player most easily identified with the franchise since the end of the Greatest Show on Turf.

It's too bad Jackson has to leave just when the Rams are trending up, finally. Jackson toiled in obscurity for most of his career here. It was only when Kroenke took over as full owner of the team that things finally got on the right track.

Jackson thanked the Rams and fans too.

Goodbye Steven. We'll miss you.

If you are holding out any hope that the Rams might bring back Steven Jackson, even at a reduced rate, it's time to let that go:

Another free-agent jolt: Rams free-agent RB Steven Jackson has reached agreement with the Atlanta Falcons.

It appears that Jackson has reached an agreement with the Atlanta Falcons, one of the many teams rumored to be in the hunt for his services. It makes sense, given that they've been in the playoffs recently and are thought to be a contender this year, more so with the return of Tony Gonzalez.

The deal is for three-years, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Financial terms have not been released. The Green Bay Packers were also interested in the veteran running back, the only active player with 10,000 career rushing yards.

In all honesty, this is a good move for Jackson. The Falcons needed a big back, and given Steven's skill-set, it's safe to assume he will do well within that organization and particularly that offense. You can only hope the success he's looking for is found in the Georgia Dome.

Let the Isaiah Pead/Daryl Richardson dynasty begin.
