Sean McVay’s high-powered offense got off to a slow start this season, a really slow start. It wasn’t until Week 13 that Jared Goff and the Rams appeared to find consistent momentum and rediscovered All-Pro running back Todd Gurley II. Outside of two massive letdowns against the Bucs and Ravens, the Rams’ defense has proved to be formidable. The Week 7 addition of cornerback Jalen Ramsey has allowed the secondary to play more man coverage, which has enabled the front seven to get after the quarterback. The Rams had 13 sacks through their first six games, but they have added 30 more over their past seven outings.

I loved this stat from NBC, delivered late in the Rams’ impressive 28-12 win over the Seahawks on Sunday night at the Coliseum: Todd Gurley, Tyler Higbee and Robert Woods are the first teammate trio with 100-plus scrimmage yards each in consecutive games since the 2000 Vikings and their great troika of Cris Carter, Randy Moss and Robert Smith. Sunday night was essentially a playoff game for the Rams, and the pressure will remain at that level for the balance of the regular season as they chase the 9-4 Vikings for the NFC’s final wild-card spot. Los Angeles might have to win out for a chance to defend its NFC title in January, but it suddenly doesn’t feel like an impossible ask, with Jared Goff playing confidently and Gurley suddenly moving like the Gurley of old. The Rams are peaking at the right time.

He won’t get a lot of credit, but tight end Tyler Higbee has been a big part of the Rams’ resurgence. He has back-to-back 100-yard games with Gerald Everett out. Getting Jared Goff out of his funk and feeding Todd Gurley more are probably bigger factors, but Higbee looks like he needs an expanded role in 2020.

Watching the Rams on Sunday was like taking a trip in a time machine all the way back to the innocent days of ... last November. Back then, Los Angeles was still the envy of the league, thanks to a relentless offensive attack. We hadn’t seen much of that this season, at least not before Jared Goff threw for more than 400 yards in a little more than three quarters against the Cardinals. Robert Woods had 13 catches for 172 yards and Todd Gurley chipped in with 115 yards from scrimmage and a score. The big question: Was this the sign of a turnaround for the Rams ... or was it merely a mirage against one of the league’s have-nots? This week’s prime-time showdown against the Seahawks will tell us a lot.

Facing another likely MVP on Monday, Goff was outclassed. How have things gone south so quickly in Los Angeles? The Rams will have plenty of time to unpack that mystery immediately following Week 17.

The Rams got a win they needed Sunday night. Aaron Donald finished with two sacks, and the Los Angeles defense held the Bears to under 300 yards of offense in a 17-7 victory at the Coliseum. The most promising moment for the offense came midway through the fourth quarter, after a 51-yard touchdown pass from Jared Goff to Jeff Reynolds was wiped away by an illegal-formation penalty on Andrew Whitworth. Instead of going into a shell, the Rams marched 56 yards over the next six plays for the game-clinching score. There was also optimism to be found in the running game, where Todd Gurley matched a season high with 97 yards and a score on 25 carries.

The Rams’ offense appears irreparably broken.

The Rams had that beautifully symmetrical Week 9 bye, so let’s take a closer look at Todd Gurley at the halfway point. The running back was a constant source of speculation in the offseason, as concerns about his left knee created doubt he would still be an All-Pro-caliber player in 2019 and beyond. Things aren’t looking great right now. Gurley eclipsed 100 scrimmage yards just once in the first half of the season, a 101-yard effort in Week 1 against the Panthers. For context, he surpassed the century mark nine times in 2018 and 12 times in 2017. Gurley still has a nose for the end zone -- as his seven TDs in seven games attest -- but he doesn’t seem to have that same explosiveness. How much does his statistical decline have to do with a dip in the Los Angeles’ offensive-line play? That’s a question the Rams must answer internally.

He is currently second in the NFL in receiving yards, tied for second-most receiving touchdowns and third with 99 receiving yards per game.

Biggest weakness: Consistency on offense

Too much passing? Too much running? Not enough of anything? Six games in, and through a 3-3 start, the Rams’ offense is still in search of an identity, which is shocking given how efficient the unit has been since Sean McVay took over as coach in 2017. “We look like a good offense, sometimes, look like a bad offense,” receiver Robert Woods said. “Just not being consistent.” The Rams have been unable to find consistency in their running game and rank 21st in the league, averaging 98 yards per game. They’ve relied heavily on their passing attack, which ranks sixth in averaging 272 yards per game, though even that floundered against the 49ers.

From a regular-season perspective, Sunday was the low moment of the Sean McVay era in Los Angeles. The Rams’ offense -- once the envy of the league -- was held to just 157 yards in a humbling 20-7 loss to the undefeated 49ers at the Coliseum. Jared Goff put up the type of numbers that would have looked bad even during his Jeff Fisher days (13-of-24 passing for 78 yards), his job made infinitely more difficult by an offensive line that has gone from team strength to liability seemingly overnight. And while it would be grossly premature to declare the Rams out of the NFC West race, the fact of the matter is, they’re now three games back, with a head-to-head loss to division-leading San Francisco on their ledger. McVay has been hailed as a young genius -- can he use those brains to fix a broken offense before it’s too late?
