The Rams pulled off a win in primetime. How does it reflect on the coach's fan approval?

The St. Louis Rams upped the win column after a pretty convincing win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Thursday Night Football.

It’s always fun to win games. It gave us all the slimmest hope for playoff football. If the Rams were to win out, finish 8-8 and the Seahawks lose out, the Rams would be in the playoffs... well, except the Seahawks were playing the Browns and laid a smackdown on both Cleveland and the Rams' playoff dreams.

Now, winning games basically just gives us worse draft position. It’s still fun to win those games, but potentially drops the team out of contention for a top WR, QB, OL or any other position of need. With the Rams playing Seattle and San Francisco in the final two games, that’s the catch-22. Winning gives bragging rights against divisional rivals, but drops the draft position.

<strike>Kellen Clemens</strike> <strike>Shaun Hill</strike> <strike>Austin Davis</strike> <strike>Nick Foles</strike> Case Keenum played very efficiently tossing a pair of touchdowns and Todd Gurley ran well enough to hold on to the win. A big return by Benny Cunningham provided the much needed cushion when the Bucs started to rally at the end. At times, it felt like the Rams were going to let that game slip away, but an onside kick recovery by Bryce Hager sealed the victory.

Everyone knows the drill by now: rate Jeff Fisher’s performance during the 2015 season, with a slight emphasis on the TNF win versus the Bucs. Scale is the same:

1 – Pink slip

10 – Gold jacket

Only a couple of these left, since we know the team will not be in the playoffs for the 12th season in a row.

The Rams have now strung together a two-win streak following their five-game skid. How do things shape up as they hit the West Coast for a two-game finale to the 2015 season?

Well that was something. Between the #GoldenShower uniforms and the national broadcast and the veneer of relocation laying on top of the crowd at the Edward Jones Dome, last night's 31-23 win for the St. Louis Rams over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers was certainly memorable. And that's before even mentioning Case Keenum's first half...so let's get to that.

Injuries

It looked like Michael Brockers might have dislocated his shoulder, but he was able to return to the game. Other than that for the Rams, things went pretty smoothly. The Bucs had the more significant injuries including S Chris Conte.

Performance Issues

Not last night. Not after racing out to a 21-3 halftime lead on the back of Case Keenum's 175 yards and two touchdowns.

Sure, you can say he and the Rams let up in the second half. They did. But that's what you get to do when you build up a huge lead early on. Win. Comfortably.

We did, though, get another example of the issue facing Todd Gurley and the Rams, ESPECIALLY as we begin to turn toward 2016. His 48 yards on 21 carries shows you (a) how to win when teams load up against him and (b) how he can contribute little to a Rams victory. It is, of course, the first win since he took over the starting gig that didn't require a command performance, but that's the entire point. The Rams had lived and died based on Todd Gurley. When teams began loading up against him and the rest of the offense had nothing to offer, we got a five-game losing streak to deal with. Last night, and full credit has to go to new Offensive Coordinator Rob Boras, the Rams had an escape hatch when Gurley and the running game came up short. And it worked. To perfection.

So what should the focus be to improve the Rams' woeful 2015 offense moving forward: get more pieces to get more from JTG or improve the components around the passing game to take some of the defensive focus off the run?

Standings

Things are a bit off this week since the Rams got TNF and the rest of the division has yet to play, but it's just not going to look good with the way November bitchslapped us back to reality with #Fisherball. Sure, mathematics offers the dimmest Rams fans hope of the playoffs. Don't be that stupid. It's not happening.

Schedule

As you might have heard one fillion times last night, it might have been the Rams' final game in St. Louis. They're heading out west to take on Seattle and then San Francisco to wrap up the 2015 season. With 2015 mostly a formality, those two games determine the Rams' draft position and schedule for 2016 as the Rams will get a home game* (* - in England) against the NFC East team in the same division position and and travel to the NFC North team in the same slot. Right now, that would mean the Rams will meet the Giants in London and head to Chicago to take on the Bears, but both of those opponents could change based on the next two weeks.

Case Keenum's early fireworks were enough.

And now, as per annual tradition, we have to ask ourselves:

Was that a condemnation of failures of seasons past or indicative of successes to come?

The Rams rode the explosion of the early successes of the passing game en route to a 21-3 dominating halftime lead. How, for those Rams fans who have leaned on the lack of QB performance to explain the 2015 Rams, was that even possible? What unearthed it? Was it newly promoted Offensive Coordinator Rob Boras? Was it the ineptitude of Tampa Bay's defense? Was it...well, those are the only explanations.

And what about Todd Gurley? With the Rams at 5-8 and nothing else to soak in, the media went big on the Rams rookie. A relatively pedestrian showing, what does that mean for the Rams going forward? Obviously, they can win without a marquee showing from him. Why couldn't they put these pieces together until now? Why was he so necessarily central to their gameplan instead of being a supplementary benefit?

It's late in the season. It's hard to come up with accurate answers that 14 weeks of NFL football have asked in a single game.

But with Rams Head Coach Fisher under a much hotter seat among the fan base than he seems to be among the front office, the question remains...

What stopped the Rams from doing this a month ago?

Here is a complete list of inactives for tonight's Primetime matchup between the Rams and Bucs

Tampa Bay Inactives:

QB

Ryan Griffin

LB

Bruce Carter

TE

Brandon Myers

WR

Vincent Jackson

DE

George Johnson

DT

Akeem Spence

The big name here is obviously V-Jax - which isn't a surprise given the extent of his knee injury last weekend. Missing him will hurt for Rookie QB Jameis Winston

St. Louis Inactives:

QB

Sean Mannion

CB

Eric Patterson

DT

Louis Trinca-Pasat

DE

Matt Longacre

OL

Andrew Donnal

OL

Brian Folkerts

OT

Isaiah Battle

Not much to digest here. Mannion being inactive shows (again) that the Rams aren't prioritizing his development this season. I'm a bit surprised by Matt Longacre showing up, as he played will while filling in for Chris Long. The rest is pretty par for the course for Fisher.

The St. Louis Rams and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers will play on Thursday Night Football, in a game that has no playoff implications, but should be an interesting game for fans.

This week the Rams will attempt to win their sixth game of the season and attempt to get their head coach Jeff Fisher his first 8 win season with the Rams.

If the Rams are going to win this week they will have to watch these five Buccaneers.

QB Jameis Winston

The Bucs drafted Winston first overall in the NFL Draft to be their franchise quarterback. Like any rookie QB he has shown some brilliance and has shown some disappointments. The Bucs have started to limit passes from Winston, trying to make him throw the ball less than 30 times and having him be a game manager.

Winston has been a solid QB, but has also been prone to mistakes throwing 11 interceptions. Winston has some mobility and has the accuracy to throw through tight windows. Against a defense that pressures quarterbacks like the Rams do, it will be an intriguing test for a rookie that is not afraid to throw the ball up to his playmakers.

RB Doug Martin

After two terrible seasons, Martin has rebounded with a great season, rushing for 1,214 yards and five touchdowns. The Bucs only rushed Martin 11 times against the Saints, but he finished the game with 81 rushing yards and a touchdown.

The Rams will have to stop Martin on the ground and make the Bucs throw passes with Winston. If Martin gashes the Rams defense on the ground there is a good chance that the Rams lose.

WR Mike Evans

Evans has been the number one guy for the Bucs since they drafted him in 2014. Evans has not been the touchdown machine that he was last season, catching three touchdowns instead of the 12 that he had in his rookie season.

The Rams have handled number one receivers this season. With Vincent Jackson out this week, the Bucs will need their top receiver to make plays.

TE Austin Seferian-Jenkins

The Bucs drafted Seferian-Jenkins in the second round of the 2014 NFL Draft to give their offense another weapon on the field, unfortunately for the Bucs he has barely been on the field, playing 13 games in his first two seasons combined. This season Seferian-Jenkins has 13 receptions, 201 yards, two touchdowns, he has only played four games this season.

One of the biggest weaknesses for the Rams defense has been defending good tight ends. Although Seferian-Jenkins has only six catches for 62 yards in the last two games, he has shown flashes of big play ability. In the first game of the season he caught five receptions for 110 yards and two touchdowns.

LB Lavonte David

Remember when the Rams chose Isaiah Pead over David? Well, David has been a good playmaker on the defensive side of the ball for the Bucs. So far this season David has 118 tackles, two sacks, three interceptions, and 12 pass deflections.

Against the New Orleans Saints David finished the day with 13 tackles and two pass deflections. David will be used all over the field to help defend the Rams horrible pass catchers, and it will be a surprise if he does not meet with Todd Gurley on the field.

Lets just be real. no one saw the Rams pulling a victory away from the Detroit Lions. The same Rams that gave away the win against the Baltimore Ravens three weeks ago. The same Rams team will look to get another dub in Week 15's Thursday Night Football game.

So, enough of the blasé blasé blasé. Here are the five Rams players to watch:

Players to Watch

WR Tavon Austin

Austin is one of the Ram's "light switch" players on offense. He can go through rough patches where he has no impact on offense. A few weeks later, he has four rushes for 40 yards and the team ends up winning.

It does not matter how Tavon gets the ball in his hands. The only thing that matters is involving him in the game.

DT Aaron Donald

Doug Martin is one of the top running backs this season. He has over 1,200 rushing yards on the season and he is still going strong. Luckily for the Rams, Aaron Donald is just the man to douse the lil' "Muscle Hamster."

Aaron Donald has 19 tackles for a loss this season. That is good enough for third in the league, behind fellow studs J.J. Watt and Khalil Mack (sidenote: WS Mark Barron has 13). Donald also leads the team with 11 sacks. For a defensive tackle, that's beasty, bro.

With DE Robert Quinn battling injuries, Donald is the Rams only source of consistent pass rush.

RB Todd Gurley

Todd Gurley went off for 140 yards and two touchdowns against the Detroit Lions. The last time Gurley had more than 100 yards was the Rams victory versus the San Francisco 49ers.

Since that game, Todd has been stifled by opposing defenses. In fact, he totaled only nine carries in each of the games before last week. But, abandoning Gurley is not the main problem. Against the Ravens Todd had 25 carries, yet only 66 rushing yards to his name.

The offensive line has to give Gurley some creases to slip into. That is exactly what happened versus the Lions, Gurley had plenty of negative/no gain rushes then he got loose. So while Todd needs to be fed the ball, the line has to make sure he does not get messy.

CB Trumaine Johnson

The Rams asked Tru to shadow Detroit's Calvin Johnson last week. He covered the Bear's WR Alshon Jeffery earlier in the season as well. In Tampa, you can bet Tru will be on WR Mike Evans too. At 6'5 and 231 pounds, Evans is another big receiver. Trumaine will need to use every bit of his six-foot-two frame to cover Evans.

Johnson is enjoying one of his finest seasons in his fourth year in the league. He leads the Rams with five interceptions and is second behind fellow CB Janoris Jenkins with 13 passes defended.

QB Case Keenum

Keenum connected on 14 of 22 passes for 124 yards and an interception last Sunday. This stat-line is not picture perfect, but sadly, it will probably the barometer of Rams quarterback performances. With that said, do not expect anything better than this type of performance. As long as Case does not have four or three interception game like Nick Foles has had, consider it a Gold Star day for Keenum.
