The Los Angeles Rams hosted the Dallas Cowboys as both teams played their first preseason game of the year and LA defeated the Cowboys by a final score of 13-12. Stetson Bennett did get the start for the Rams, and he found new rookie Jordan Whittington for a nice gain on their opening drive. The rookie receiver showed real toughness as he ran after the catch. Sean McVay even referred to Whittington as a “stud” during his sideline interview in the second quarter.

Whittington had a nice showing today.
Bennett very well could be fighting for the third quarterback spot and maybe even the backup role while Jimmy Garoppolo is suspended for the first couple games of the season. Despite Bennett making some nice plays, he also threw four interceptions.

He had some throws he’ll want back, but it was probably important for him to be back out on the field after missing most of last season.
In other news rookie kicker Josh Karty got a chance to make some field goals, and he delivered. It’s nice to see the young player make his kicks, but that’s the type of thing that has to happen during the regular season before he can be anointed as the new placekicker long-term.

The score remained 6-6 into the fourth quarter as neither team’s offense created substantial rhythm. Credit the defensive effort by both sides too as neither Trey Lance or Bennett (both handled the majority of the QB duties today) could do much for their respective teams.

Dallas would finally add another score to the game with about eight minutes remaining in the fourth quarter by kicking a field goal and taking a 9-6 lead over LA. They then would tack on another field goal (after Bennett’s forth interception) to increase their lead 12-6. WIth under three minutes reamaining Bennett had a real chance to drive the Rams down the field and take the lead with a touchdown.
Bennett almost threw a fifth interception on the day, however a defensive holding on Dallas prevented that. With about one minute reamaining in the contest Bennett and the Rams were driving thanks to some simple completions and a few penalties on the Cowboys. LA found themsevles in the red zone with under 30 seconds to go.
The Rams would go on to score a touchdown tying the game at 12-12 before Karty would come out to kick the extra point and take the lead.

An exciting finish for the Rams and a big response by Bennett after the interceptions. WIth all that, the first preseason game for LA is in the books as they come away with the W and get ready for their next contest against the Los Angeles Chargers.
