Will Kyren Williams unseat Christian McCaffrey for the rushing title in 2024?

Williams should be a strong contender next season after ranking just behind McCaffrey entering Week 18

With the Los Angeles Rams sitting most of their starters in Week 18, Kyren Williams will likely finish behind Christian McCaffrey for the NFL rushing title. Even if Williams played, he would need 316 yards to pass McCaffrey which was obviously never going to happen. Well, never say never I suppose.

Williams and McCaffrey weren’t too far off statistically which begs the question as to what would’ve happened if LA’s RB1 didn’t miss any time. The Rams star missed four games and still finished atop the league with an average of 95.3 rushing yards per game. McCaffrey was right behind him with 91.2 yards per game.

Amazingly enough, Kyren achieved his production on 44 less carries and averaged 19 carries a game compared to Christian’s 17. Being mentioned in the same breath as the All-Pro in only his sophomore campaign speaks to the stellar play Williams has been putting up when healthy. He has even attracted the attention of former Jaguars running back Maurice Jones-Drew.

I believe any argument debating who’s better between Williams and McCaffrey is irrelevant. Let’s just accept and appreciate their greatness and move on. Having the 49ers and Rams being led by two of the league’s top running backs adds an additional layer into the heated NFC West rivalry.

If healthy, both players should be in the mix for the rushing title again in 2024. I expect the Notre Dame product to give CMC or other challengers a run for their money next season as his impact on LA’s offense is undeniable. The balanced offensive attack led by Williams is a force that can play with anyone.

The second-year running back has taken Hollywood and the league by storm. His success was surprising and much-needed following the whole Cam Akers debacle to kick off the year. Despite not winning the rushing title, at least Kyren Williams can take solace in winning the “Nickelodeon Valuable Player” for Week 17.

Beat that McCaffrey! Just forget that he won it back in October. Let Kyren enjoy the spotlight, he’s earned it and I expect the attention he’s receiving is only going to grow in the coming seasons.
