One year ago Baker Mayfield led the Rams to a dramatic win over the Las Vegas Raiders

On 12-8-22, Baker Mayfield did what seemed impossible.

One year ago today, Baker Mayfield led one of the most improbable comebacks and perhaps one of the most improbable wins in Los Angeles Rams history. Did I remember this moment on my own? Not at all! The internet reminded me. Do I remember watching that specific game? Absolutely. It was a Thursday night game on Amazon Prime. The Rams were taking on the Las Vegas Raiders and it seemed to be certain that the Rams would fall to the Raiders. Then this happened:

Bananas, bonkers and for Raiders fans, blasphemous! I know teams say each year is different and new, but are you telling me that Mark Davis didn’t think about this game at all when he fired head coach of the Raiders, Josh McDaniels, this season? Actually maybe not because of a number of other brutal losses the Raiders had with McDaniels leading the team.

Mayfield is now the starting quarterback for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and it’s no secret he credits his time with the Rams and McVay as helping his career. Part of what makes this story so wild is that Baker was signed by the Rams the week they were set to play Vegas on a Thursday, and then two days later he was playing in real NFL action. Not totally unlike what Joshua Dobbs did when he came off the bench for the Minnesota Vikings this season.

Then there is the backstory about McVay and Mayfield reportedly sharing a plane ride prior to Mayfield being drafted number one overall by the Cleveland Browns. There’s a lot to chew on here! It’s Friday so I’ll keep it short, please let us know what you think in the comments below! Or if nothing else, maybe toast a Friday beverage to Mayfield for what he did for LA last holiday season. Once a Ram always a Ram. Happy holidays!
