In what could easily turn into a game with 100 pass attempts, the Los Angeles Rams host the Washington Commanders in SoFi Stadium today at 1:05 p.m. PST. The Commanders trek west well-rested after their bye week, while the Rams try to shake off last week’s grueling 37-31 overtime loss to the Baltimore Ravens.

Second-year quarterback Sam Howell runs the Commanders offense. He was named starter for Week 1 and the team won their opening two games, knocking off the Arizona Cardinals and Denver Broncos. They’ve gone 2-9 since. Before the bye week, Washington was on a four game losing slide, falling to the Miami Dolphins, Dallas Cowboys, New York Giants, and Seattle Seahawks.

In 13 games, Howell has already thrown the ball 509 times, tops in the NFL, and 40+ in eight of the last 10 games. He’s completed 66 percent for 3446 yards and 18 touchdowns , while adding 243 yards rushing and five more TD’s. Like most young QB’s, he’s prone to mistakes, leading the league in interceptions (14) and sacks taken (58).

Howell throws to a stable of talented, young receivers. Jahan Dotson (Round 1 in ’22), Terry McLaurin (Round 3 in 2019), and Curtis Samuel (Round 2 in 2017) have combined for 155 catches. Washington has veteran Logan Thomas at tight end with 45 catches, but makes use of two-tight end sets, bringing in John Bates and/or Cole Turner.

With top running back Brian Robinson and his 664 yards rushing ruled out with a hamstring issue, Washington will lean on Antonio Gibson in the backfield. Although Gibson did have a 1000+ rushing yards in 2021, he is better known for his receiving skills. He’s averaged 40 catches per season and is on that pace in 2023.

DraftKings Sportsbook has installed the Rams as prohibitive favorites, but the L.A. defense has generally allowed opposing quarterbacks to play pitch-and-catch and played down to the competition. Will it continue or will the Rams take care of business and stay embedded in the playoff race? Here’s how to find out.
