Does this years Los Angeles Rams coaching staff have another future NFL head coach from the Sean McVay coaching tree? First, let’s recap where the McVay tree stands. Since becoming the youngest head coach hired in 2017, three former staffers are now NFL head coaches. Green Bay Packers Matt LaFleur was McVay’s offensive coordinator in 2017. Cincinnati Bengals Zac Taylor was the Ram’s quarterbacks coach in 2018. And the Los Angeles Chargers Brandon Staley served as the Rams defensive coordinator in 2020.
The Rams coordinators for 2021 are:
Kevin O'Connell, OC
O’Connell is a former quarterback, drafted in the fourth round of the 2008 NFL Draft by the New England Patriots. His coaching career started in 2015 as the quarterbacks coach for the Cleveland Browns. He’s also coached for the San Francisco 49ers and the Washington Football Team and worked his first season with the Rams last season as the offensive coordinator. O’connell has built a robust resume over six seasons but has yet to fully take the reigns as a play caller. He is in a favorable position working under Sean McVay in the Ram’s offense which has proven top tier but McVay has retained the play calling duties to this point.
Raheem Morris, DC
Morris’ NFL coaching career started in 2002 as a quality control assistant for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. His coaching path overlapped with McVay in Tampa Bay and in Washington. Morris was also the head coach for the Buccaneers for three years from 2009 to 2011 producing 17 wins over that span. He also finished the 2020 season as the interim head coach for the Atlanta Falcons. This year he takes over the Rams defense which ranked first in the NFL last season in terms of total yards and points allowed.
