NFL: NFC Divisional Round-Los Angeles Rams at Green Bay Packers Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

Adam Schein at NFL.com posted his top nine defenses heading into the 2021 season and has ranked the Los Angeles Rams unit at number one. The top placement comes as no surprise to those who know what the Rams did in 2020 on their way to posting the best season of all 32 teams when it comes to points and yards allowed.

The list has the Rams just above the Super Bowl Champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Indianapolis Colts making the top three. None of the other NFC West teams made the list most notably the San Francisco 49ers who had an impressive defensive run with former coordinator Robert Saleh, now the Head Coach of the New York Jets.

The three time Defensive Player of the Year Aaron Donald leads the group along with the best cornerback in the league in Jalen Ramsey. Veteran linebacker Leonard Floyd and cornerback Darious Williams both had breakout campaigns and are expecting to follow up. And newcomers like second year safety Jordan Fuller and Terrell Burgess will look to solidify their part in the defense.

As always with being the known best in the business, now the Rams defense won’t be sneaking up on anyone. The tape is being studied and the coach has been promoted on another team. Brandon Staley, former Rams defensive coordinator is now with the Los Angeles Chargers and is replaced by Raheem Morris.

If the projection holds true and the Rams defense is set for another dominant year, the first chance to prove it will be against the Chicago Bears on September 12th. Other notable offenses scheduled to test Sean Mcvay’s top ranked defense this season are the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Tennessee Titans, and Green Bay Packers.
