The breakout season of Los Angeles Rams cornerback Darious Williams was one of best stories to come out of the 2020 season. Having someone to provide that reliability and spark across from Jalen Ramsey becomes necessary when teams rarely attack the shutdown corners side of the field.
Where do Ramsey and Williams rank among cornerback duos heading into 2021? Cynthia Frelund at NFL.com has the Rams defenders listed as the fifth best tandem going into this season. She has them ranked just above the Cleveland Browns and the Pittsburgh Steelers and just below the Denver Broncos and the Miami Dolphins.
While NFL.com recently picked Ramsey as the best single cornerback in the game, it’s great to see Williams getting some recognition after posting four interceptions in his third season.
With Aaron Donald and Leonard Floyd providing the pass rush, and safeties Jordan Fuller and John Johnson III rounding out the secondary, the 2020 Rams put forth the top rated Defense in the league. This season Johnson will play for the Cleveland Browns after signing as a free agent. At this point in the preseason, Taylor Rapp is projected to take Johnson’s place at safety alongside Fuller.
Ramsey has also been seen playing the inside star position more frequently starting from a few times last season and is projected to play more of that role this year. When Ramsey plays inside, it’s been third year cornerback David Long Jr. as the next man up to play on the outside with Williams. Terrell Burgess and Dont’e Deayon will provide depth for the secondary led by the apparent fifth best cornerback duo in the league.
