Brandon Flowers played cornerback in the NFL for nine seasons — six with the Chiefs, three with the San Diego Chargers — so he’s got plenty of familiarity with playing the position at the highest level. But Flowers made a bit of a bold move in his top-five cornerback rankings for the NFL Network this week, placing Stephon Gilmore at number one despite a disappointing 2020 campaign, and situating LA’s Jalen Ramsey three spots behind him at number four.

1 - Stephon Gilmore, Patriots
2 - Xavien Howard, Dolphins
3 - Jaire Alexander, Packers
4 - Jalen Ramsey, Rams
5 - Tre’Davious White, Bills
Gilmore was the Defensive Player of the Year in 2019, but missed five games and only recorded one interception in 2020. These rankings are for corners ‘entering the 2021 season’ so clearly Flowers believes that Gilmore will bounce back to the top.
Howard led the NFL with 10 interceptions last season. Alexander made his first Pro Bowl roster last year and he is entering his fourth NFL campaign. According to Pro-Football-Reference, Alexander allowed five touchdowns in 2019 and another two in 2020; Ramsey has allowed six touchdowns total in the last three years and we also know that he could be the most versatile cornerback in the league.
All five of these cornerbacks seem to belong in the top-five. It’s the order that will be a matter of debate for most.
