Ever since Sean McVay took over the Rams, the offense’s usage of motion prior to the snap sky-rocketed. It started a trend in the NFL that still remains in place as of today where most teams are constantly attempting to gain any sort of advantage over their opponent.
However, despite being an avid user of pre-snap motion over the past few seasons, how did former Rams quarterback Jared Goff become the worst passer off that type of throw in the NFL this past season?
I know that’s probably hard to believe, but according to USA Today’s Doug Farrar, that was the unfortunate truth.
Here’s what he had to say about the former Ram:
Pre-snap motion is supposed to help quarterbacks. It can help a quarterback determine whether man or zone coverage is coming. It can put defenses in bad matchup situations. It can isolate defenders who are not quite up to covering the guys they’re about to cover. And Sean McVay has one of the more interesting set of pre-snap concepts — everything from jet motions to motion to trips and bunch. So why is it, you may ask, that Jared Goff, McVay’s former quarterback, managed to complete 152 of 237 passes for 1,559 yards, 669 air yards, eight touchdowns, eight interceptions, and a passer rating of 80.1? Well, you have to see how the defense adjusts to that motion, so it could be said that for some quarterbacks, pre-snap movement can be just as confusing for them as it is for those defenses.
The good news for Rams fans, however, is that the guy they replaced Goff with, Matthew Stafford, threw for 1,734 yards, 13 touchdowns, and five interceptions when using pre-snap motion. So expect some concrete improvement in that area this season.
