Just three days following the NFL draft, the CFL held their draft ahead of the 2021 season which is scheduled to start later this year on August 5th. The Grey Cup has also been scheduled for December 12th.
With the 15th-overall pick, the BC Lions drafted Iowa offensive tackle Alaric Jackson, someone you all may know as one of the Rams’ recent notable UDFA signings.
Here’s what Lions head coach and co-GM Rick Campbell had to say about their selection of Jackson:
“Alaric played a lot of really good football for Iowa and signed as an NFL free agent (with the L.A. Rams) We might have thought a little differently had he been drafted (in the NFL). We’re going to play the odds that we will see him at some point. So we’ll wish those guys the best with this season and look forward to seeing them in the future.”
Like Campbell alluded to, he doesn’t expect Jackson to join the team anytime in the near future, but due to Jackson’s status as a UDFA, the team has a general idea of how likely it is that Jackson chooses playing time in the CFL over possibly riding the pine in the NFL.
At the end of the day, I’d be quite surprised to ever see Jackson go out of his way to play in the Great White North over sunny Los Angeles.
