Rams pick receiver Ben Skowronek late in the 7th round

“The draft gem nobody is talking about”

NCAA Football: Senior Bowl Practice Vasha Hunt-USA TODAY Sports

With the 249th pick of the 2021 NFL Draft, in the seventh round, the LA Rams selected wide receiver Ben Skowronek out of Notre Dame. This is the third receiver or tight end that Les Snead has drafted out of eight picks so far in the 2021 NFL Draft. It will be a heavy competition to round out the last one or two spots on the roster in August and September.

Skowronek was “the draft gem that no one is talking about” according to Raising Arizona:

Skowronek is 6’2″, 220lbs with 10″ hands. He may not be ready for a WR1 role, but more of a WR2/WR3 usage. There’s also the fact that he could become a tight end, similar to how Dan Arnold evolved when he came into the league.

Teams will most likely have to be patient with Skowronek who suffered a Jones fracture in his foot during practice in the week of this year’s Senior Bowl.

Scouts have said that he’s not the greatest on speed. Which really isn’t an issue because he makes up for it with great ball skills and being able to make great cuts no matter which part of his route tree he is running.

Skowronek spent four seasons at Northwestern before transferring to Notre Dame with one more year of eligibility in 2020. He responded with 29 catches for 439 yards, getting far more attention than teammate Tre’ McKitty, a tight end who was picked in the third round. The Rams now add Skowronek to the roster, where he could compete at receiver or tight end but certainly as a special teamer first and foremost. Interesting potential, similar to Jacob Harris in the fourth round.
