Rams don’t tag John Johnson, making him one of the top safeties in free agency

The LA Rams will not tag safety John Johnson, making him one of the top players at his position on the market. Especially so after Marcus Williams, Marcus Maye, and Justin Simmons were tagged by the Saints, Jets, and Broncos. It now appears that Johnson and the Vikings’ Anthony Harris will be far and away the top safeties in free agency and that could significantly increase their market value.

Spotrac estimated Johnson’s AAV as $8.3 million, but that seems way too low.

There 17 safeties making at least $9 million annually last year and Johnson could be a top-10 player at the position. More importantly, he’ll be a top-two player at the position for any team that is desperate for a valuable starting safety to add to their defense. Johnson played in 100% of the snaps in 2020 and called plays for defensive coordinator Brandon Staley. In fact, the Chargers may be the top team going after Johnson for his services when free agency opens next week.

The Rams are also not tagging linebacker Leonard Floyd.
