At the end of the 2018 NFL season, quarterback Jared Goff was leading the Los Angeles Rams into Super Bowl 53 with Sean McVay. Today he returns to LA as the leader of the Detroit Lions. The Rams quarterback is former Lion, 12 year veteran Matthew Stafford. The Rams are 5-1 and the Lions are 0-6.
The beginning of the end for Goff in Los Angeles could be traced back to Super Bowl 53 since the Rams lost that game to the New England Patriots by failing to score a single touchdown and failed to make the playoffs the following season marking the only such failure in the McVay era.
The sense at the end of the 2020 season was that with a team built for contention from the head coach hiring of 2017 to the first big trade of the era for Jalen Ramsey and having already the three time defensive player of the year in Aaron Donald, the sense was that the quarterback had regressed or at least plateaued and was holding the team back. So the next biggest trade of the McVay era occurred when Matthew Stafford was traded for Goff and a pair of first round picks.
It may take years to see the complete results of the trade but for now here’s what we know. The Rams are one of the top passing attacks in the league, ranked fifth, and are 5-1. The Lions rank 20th in passing yards and are 0-6. The two face off today. Matthew Stafford against the Lions and Jared Goff against the Rams. The one thing that has not changed is that LA is aggressively seeking a championship and that remains a team goal on every game day, over any one individual, in any jersey.
