In Bleacher Report’s latest article on the “winners and losers” of NFL training camps so far, the Rams’ backfield was listed among the “losers,” with author Gary Davenport focusing on the team’s lack of depth at the position being a huge red flag heading into the 2020 season.
“In some respects, the Rams are in the opposite offensive situation as the Patriots. In wide receivers Cooper Kupp and Robert Woods and tight ends Tyler Higbee and Gerald Everett, they have no shortage of pass-catchers.”
“But with Todd Gurley now toting the rock in Atlanta, the running back position was a major question mark entering training camp, and that picture hasn’t gotten any clearer.”
Per Gary Klein of the Los Angeles Times, second-year running Darrell Henderson suffered a hamstring injury over the weekend. Although the team is remaining optimistic, there is a chance he could miss the opening week contest against the Dallas Cowboys.
According to Davenport, Henderson only averaged 3.8 yards per carry in 2019. Veteran Malcolm Brown, who showed a knack for finding the end zone last season, also averaged a meager 3.7 YPC.
However, the team did just draft the very-talented Cam Akers with their first pick in the draft and I fully expect Akers to win this job outright sooner rather than later. Even though he has yet to carry the ball in a professional football game, the guy just exudes play-making ability and I will never be the one to bet against him.
So do the Rams really have a lack of depth at the position? Maybe. But time will tell us everything we need to know about that. Right now, the room has a load of upside, which is more than a number of other teams can say about their groups.
Now for today’s links.
