Jeremy Fowler of ESPN reported yesterday that the NFL is planning to release the 2020 regular season schedule on Thursday at 8pm ET. Even with all the uncertainty surrounding the upcoming season, the NFL will be unveiling the schedule without any major changes to the normal, expected slate of events. That includes the season opener on September 10th and this season’s Super Bowl on February 7th.

League spokesman Brian McCarthy also told ESPN that they are planning to release its preseason schedule, as well.

“If we have to make adjustments, we will be prepared to do so based on the latest guidance from our medical experts and public health officials and current and future government regulations,” McCarthy said. “We made adjustments and conducted safely and efficiently key offseason activities such as free agency, the virtual off-season program and the 2020 NFL Draft.”

The league has evaluated a number of contingency plans in case of a second “boom” in the pandemic, with one of those being to delay the season until mid-october. For what it’s worth, there has been no discussion on potentially playing the season in a centralized location.

Lastly, the NFL is still evaluating when they will allow players and staff to reenter team facilities. Both the NFL and the NFLPA have agreed to keep buildings closed until every state that hosts an NFL team lifts its stay-at-home mandate. As of now, teams are still prepared to conduct the workouts and the June minicamp virtually.
