On Wednesday morning, CBS Sports’ Pete Prisco released his “Top 100 NFL Players of 2020” and you’re never going to guess which Ram was named the second-best player in the entire league.
No guesses? Nothing?
It was none other than the greatest defensive player over the last half-decade, defensive tackle Aaron Donald. The only player to beat him out? Well that would be Super Bowl 54 champion and the magic man himself, quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
“He continues to be a force on the inside of the Rams defense, a pocket-pushing power player who makes it tough on offenses,” Prisco said of Donald. “His sack numbers went down last year, but his play wasn’t far off.”
Donald’s chance for a three-peat at the NFL’s Defensive Player of the Year award were thwarted by Patriots cornerback Stephon Gilmore who benefited from a stellar season on a New England defense that spent the first half of 2019 on a historic pace. Donald is still well in his prime as a player and he should be rightfully at the top of next year’s preseason list as the odds-on favorite to bring home his third piece of hardware.
Since 1971, when the NFL started giving out the award, Donald is the only Rams player in franchise history to win the honor.
