Wade Phillips has been mostly quiet since he was surprisingly relieved of his duties as the Rams’ defensive coordinator in January.

However, this week, the delightful Phillips appeared on Texas radio show, SicEm365 Radio. Phillips’ time with the Rams was part of an interesting 15-minute interview. You can listen here.

As explained here by one of the hosts, Phillips was surprised by his dismissal:

Phillips is famous for taking defenses underperforming and immediately finding success. As he noted, that’s what he did with the Rams.

Phillips was the Rams’ defensive coordinator from 2017 to 2019, and the team went to the Super Bowl during his second season in L.A. The reason why the Rams lost that SB LIII 13-3 was not because of Phillips’ defense, which shutdown Tom Brady and the Patriots for much of the game and kept them out of the end zone until the fourth quarter.

After the Rams went 9-7 last year and did not make the playoffs, Phillips’ contract was not renewed.

Phillips, 72, talked in the interview about how good coaches adjust to their talent. There were questions how Aaron Donald would fit into Phillips’ 3-4 defenses, but the former DC noted that Donald won two NFL Defensive Player of the Year awards under him in 2017 and ’18.

Check out the interview, it’s a good listen from a coach who made a big impact on the Rams in a short time.
