Random Ramsdom: NFL may incentivize teams to hire minorites for HC, GM positions

On Friday, NFL.com’s Jim Trotter reported on a proposal to be voted on by NFL owners next week that would incentivize clubs to hire coaches and general managers of color by increasing their draft positions in future.

As Trotter stated in his report, there are currently only four black head coaches and two general managers. That’s represents the lowest mark since the Rooney Rule’s inception back in 2003.

For those who haven’t read the full proposal or any in-depth reports just yet, the new proposal would allow teams to see their third-round picks move up depending on whether they hire a person of color to either the HC or GM position. If a team hires a POC as their head coach, the team’s third-round pick in the draft following the coach’s first season would move up six spots. If they hire a minority GM, their pick moves up 10 spots. Should a team hire a POC at both positions, they will see their third-round pick move up 16 full spots. In that scenario, a team with a high pick could see their third-rounder go from early third to middle of the second just like that.

There’s also a final perk that would see their fourth-round pick move up five spaces if those hired are with the team for at least three years.

Last time I checked, the social media world was not taking this proposal well at all. Many thought it was an initially reported by a parody account. Most said they checked Trotter’s account multiple times to make sure they weren’t being pranked. But it’s as real as it gets.

While the move would certainly get the wheels turning a bit more, I don’t think it’s the right way to go about this issue. There’s certainly a better solution than bribing teams in a roundabout way to hire minorities just for the sake of getting better draft position. As of now, we don’t know if there would be any checks and balances that would halt teams from gaining the benefits and firing those hires as soon as they could.

I’d be vehemently surprised to see this one get voted through.
