Random Ramsdom: Matthew Berry a bit higher on Goff after draft

Two weeks ago, I wrote about my conversation with ESPN’s Matthew Berry and his overall thoughts on the Rams and his predictions for players like Jared Goff, Cooper Kupp, and Tyler Higbee in 2020. Now that the draft has come and gone, Berry has updated his rankings and seems to be a bit higher on some players than he was prior, including Goff.

When we last spoke, Berry did not have Goff inside his top-20 quarterbacks. This was mostly due to the loss of Todd Gurley and the inconsistency he showed last season by throwing for less than 200 yards twice and even one game of 78 passing yards.

Now, Berry has placed Goff at QB18, just ahead of this year’s #1-overall pick, Joe Burrow, and the BroncosDrew Lock.

This increase in trust likely stems from the Rams’ draft picks of running back Cam Akers and wide receiver Van Jefferson. Both fit the offensive scheme that Sean McVay wants to run and both have their own propensity for making big plays. Akers also may have the best receiving chops out of the backfield at this moment so it wouldn’t surprise me to see Akers take on the bulk of the snaps.

As far as other Rams players’ ranks, Akers comes in at RB29, Darrell Henderson is his RB38, and Malcolm Brown rounds it out at RB56. For Robert Woods and Kupp, they came in at WR18 and 19. For tight end Tyler Higbee, he’s squarely in the top group at TE7.
