After his incredible breakout performance against the Patriots this past Thursday, rookie running back Cam Akers is your NFC Offensive Player of the Week in Week 15.
The second-rounder out of Florida State recorded his first game of 100+ rushing yards, finishing with 171 yards on 29 carries with no scores. He also chipped in 23 receiving yards on a pair of catches. The 171 yards on the ground were also the most by a Rams rookie back since Jerome Bettis all the way back in 1993.
Akers’ performance was largely thanks to a stellar outing by the Rams offensive line. Every run seemed to involve enormous running lanes and Akers didn’t often get contacted by a defender until he was already well past the line of scrimmage. That’s a great sign for the line, especially since they seem to be clicking with the playoffs right around the corner.
Does this mean Akers is the bonafide RB1 for the Rams moving forward? I truly hope so, but time will tell with this coaching staff.
Now for today’s links.
