Random Ramsdom: Rams earn ‘C-’ in SNF loss to 49ers

Another week, another round of letter grades from CBS Sports’ John Breech. Unlike the past few weeks, though, the Rams aren’t heading into the week with a glistening mark.

For their unfortunate blunder against the 49ers, Sean McVay and company received a “C-” in their 24-16 loss on Sunday night. Breech does right to give kudos to the Rams who did well, but unfortunately the one player who needed to play as clean as possible, did not.

Here’s what he had to say:

“Darrell Henderson looked explosive. Robert Woods and Cooper Kupp got open. Sean McVay dialed up a cool lateral that got a few yards. And just because they kept it close, nearly rallying at the end, it’s hard to fail them here. But this was a falling-back-to-Earth moment for L.A. What in the world happened to Jared Goff? Everyone knows he can crumble under pressure, but it’s not like San Francisco was feasting up front all night. His erratic play is reason No. 1 for their prime-time dud.”

It’s was an uncharacteristically flat performance by the team overall, unfortunately. After Aaron posted four of the team’s eight sacks last week, the Rams failed to get to Jimmy G even once. They struggled to disrupt the Niners offense throughout, only notching a pair of tackles-for-loss on the night. It didn’t help that Garoppolo released the ball quicker than any QB the Rams have faced up to this point, but that may be an indictment of how the secondary played that he was able to make his reads so quickly all night long.

The Rams are set to host the 5-1 Chicago Bears next in what could be another tricky matchup. The Bears defense has been an underrated unit so far and is the main reason they have just one loss on the year despite up-and-down quarterback play.
