2019 Los Angeles Rams roster preview: TE Kendall Blanton ready for his entrance

New, comments

Could the UDFA rookie find himself on the 53-man roster come September?

NFL: Los Angeles Rams-OTA Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

Los Angeles Rams TE Kendall Blanton is another undrafted free agent looking to earn a roster spot. A four-year player for the Missouri Tigers, he was a rotational option working for the last two years behind star TE Albert Okwuegbunam.

Roster Battle

Blanton will compete with multiple bodies at the tight end position. The two locks are Gerald Everett — who could see an extended role offensively — and Tyler Higbee, who’s in a contract year. The remaining guys are Johnny Mundt, Keenan Brown (roster preview) and Blanton. Generally, a team will keep three tight ends on the active roster, meaning Blanton has a shot to earn a spot.

Expectations

As a rookie UDFA, Blanton’s only goal should be to stick in the NFL in any way possible. Whether that means the practice squad or active roster, Blanton has to have a strong camp and preseason presence if he’s to stick on the 53-man roster.

Chances of making the final roster (1/10)

Blanton may not stick on the active roster, though he could very well earn a practice squad spot. The third tight end on a roster is typically a very solid blocker and special teams player. With that being the case, I believe Mundt has a strong leg up on his competition for the final tight end spot on the active roster.
