Welp. We’re off and running into the offseason. Time to start taking the 2019 NFL Draft and thus the mocks seriously (and by seriously I mean anything but).

Today, we’ve got the second mock draft from ESPN’s Todd McShay (ESPN+ subscription required) and he’s got a doozy of a pick for the Los Angeles Rams with the 31st pick of the draft.

Before that, some mock talk.

Nothing really surprising through the first six picks if you’ve been paying attention to mocks at this point. Ohio State Buckeyes EDGE Joey Bosa is the conventional #1 and McShay doesn’t stray from that. Ohio St. QB Dwayne Haskins is his first QB at #6 to the New York Giants.

Things start to get interesting at #7 where he has the Jacksonville Jaguars taking Mississippi St. Bulldogs DT Jeffery Simmons. My dream drop for the Rams is LSU Tigers ILB Devin White. McShay has him at #12 to the Green Bay Packers. Boo.

One pick later, McShay has the Miami Dolphins taking Oklahoma Sooners QB Kyler Murray. He’s going to be a fascinating pick given his size and perhaps unclear commitment to the sport.

At #23, McShay has a name I haven’t seen in the first round before: Vanderbilt Commodores CB Joejuan Williams.

One big note on this mock? For Rams fans that are keeping an eye on edge rushers, this is a bit of a perfect scenario. McShay has very few of the bigger name edge rushing prospects in this mock, though he does have Old Dominion Monarchs EDGE Oshane Ximines at #30 one pick before the Rams going to the Green Bay Packers via their trade with the New Orleans Saints from the 2018 NFL Draft that the Saints pulled off to take their own edge rusher in EDGE Marcus Davenport.

As for the Rams, make sure you’re sitting down...

#31.) Alabama Crimson Tide TE Irv Smith, Jr.

Super Bowl stinker aside, this offense is outstanding, and the addition of a matchup piece like Smith would just give Jared Goff and Sean McVay one more weapon. He has speed and athleticism. But there are also a lot of holes on defense, so the Rams might look to add to the secondary.

Man...that’s hard to get behind.

Rams TE Tyler Higbee is going into a contract year in 2019 while TE Gerald Everett still has two more seasons locked down. Irv Smith is a fine prospect, but if you look at the needs over the next few seasons that a first-round rookie should be helping to address, I dunno that tight end is in the top six or so...

But hey. Who knows. If you’re a purist when it comes to a best player available strategy, you could get behind this. And maybe Rams Head Coach Sean McVay is just waiting for the right talent at tight end to get more production out of the position.

But as things stand, this mock is probably going to leave a sour taste in the mouths of Rams fans.

This fan included.
