Los Angeles Rams 17, Chicago Bears 7: Another week

The most maddening thing about the 2019 Los Angeles Rams is the unpredictability of the offense.

Down three of their Week 1 starting offensive linemen, the Rams turned to a hodgepodge of rookies and recent additions...and played maybe their best game at the line. With it, QB Jared Goff looked...quite below average for most of the game. A successful late drive put the game away and perhaps offered some hope coming out of the game. And after failing to get RB Todd Gurley a single touch in the fourth quarter of last week’s loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers, Gurley was overused tonight with 25 carries, by far a season high, that even outpaced Goff’s passing attempts.

This offense is a chameleon.

Tonight, combined with another stellar defensive performance, the late drive and the mistake from the Chicago Bears that allowed WR Cooper Kupp to run free for 50 yards and a near-touchdown (that was a near-safety as well...), the Rams won 17-7.

It was an ugly game marked more by underwhelming offense than overwhelming defense. Goff and Bears QB Mitchell Trubisky were not good. The real difference? Goff marshaled a touchdown-scoring drive late while Trubisky was, surprisingly benched. It was strange to see it from Goff especially because the new look offensive line was...not bad at all! Against the Bears’ front seven and EDGE Khalil Mack, there were significant concerns that Goff was going to get killed tonight. He didn’t. Not even close to it!

We’ll have to see how the team looks on the injury report mid-week, but the Rams needed to come out of this with a win. They got the win.

Mission accomplished. Even if in unpredictable fashion.
