August 6
Practice begins at 11:00am PT
Well this is gonna be different.
The Los Angeles Rams are in northwest Baltimore today to hold joint training camp practices today and tomorrow with the Baltimore Ravens. On Thursday, they’ll play in the Rams’ preseason opener; the Ravens already got their preseason underway with last week’s Hall of Fame Game against the Chicago Bears.
Today should start out somewhat tepid. We know both coaches are going to try to keep a lid on things to prevent any kerfuffles, any donnybrooks. So they’re not going to come out the gate full-contact letting guys just absolutely run over each other and expect things to stay straightened out.
Ravens Head Coach John Harbaugh had some insight on the setup yesterday after the Ravens’ camp practice:
Sean [McVay] and I have spent a lot of time talking. Our coordinators have been back-and-forth.
I think it will be very smooth running because we kind of practice the same way. It’s going to be great to have them in here. We respect them and we appreciate their help coming in.
...
It’s the same parameters as we have at our practices. There will be no tackling to the ground. . . It will just be ‘bumping’.
So let’s get to bumping!
Injuries
So this one’s gonna be interesting. Coming out of the weekend, the Rams were at:
Physically Unable To Perform (PUP) List - Active
- DE Dominique Easley
- EDGE Ogbonnia Okoronkwo
Did Not Report (DNR) List - Reserve
- DL Aaron Donald
But the Rams got a little banged up on the way out. S Lamarcus Joyner is dealing with a sore Achilles, so he might not be a full go though he is with the team. TE Gerald Everett and EDGE Matt Longacre, though, both stayed back in LA to work on shoulder and bicep injuries, respectively.
Offense
Obviously, most will gravitate to the skill positions today. With QB Jared Goff, RB Todd Gurley and the Rams’ receiving corps at work, that’ll draw tons of attention.
I’m more interested in the line and not just the starters. With RG Jamon Brown suspended for the first two games of the season and the new crop of offensive rookie linemen, this is where I’ll be paying attention.
Defense
Linebackers, linebackers, linebackers. With Longacre out, there’s legitimate opportunity on Thursday. Someone has to start across from EDGE Samson Ebukam in front seven packages and that slides the depth up as well. And of course with ILB Mark Barron still being limited, we could see a whole new linebacking group start compared to how the Rams finished last season.
