Los Angeles Rams waive OLB Carlos Thompson

The Rams have made a bit of a surprise move in releasing the second-year Ram.

In concert with the undrafted free agent signings last evening, the Los Angeles Rams announced they have waived OLB Carlos Thompson.

Thompson joined the Rams last April and was able to make the practice squad as the season opened. In December, they brought Thompson up to the active roster as he saw action in three games in December.

That being said, I’m a bit surprised at the move. Thompson wasn’t a holdover from the Jeff Fisher era. He was someone the Rams specifically targeted for Head Coach Sean McVay and Defensive Coordinator Wade Phillips. As the primary backup behind OLB Matt Longacre and OLB Samson Ebukam last year, I thought he’d be in the mix for the second string behind those two heading into training camp. Perhaps this is then an indication of the faith the staff has in the linebackers coming in from the draft class and the initial wave of UDFAs.
