The Los Angeles Rams’ salary cap situation is looking much more attractive after the Alec Ogletree trade

The Rams cleared quite a bit of room with the trade of ILB Alec Ogletree.

First of all, thank you to former Los Angeles Rams ILB Alec Ogletree. We know you were dedicated in helping the franchise turnaround as the Rams came back to Los Angeles, and we commend your effort.

But as of today, Tree is no longer a Ram. The Rams entered the NFL transaction machine again trading away yet another well-paid defender.

The Rams ended up with fourth- and sixth-round picks from the New York Giants which gives the Rams more ammo in both rounds. But the real bonus from the deal may be on the salary cap front.

Since Ogletree just signed an extension this season, the money saved on the deal is unfortunately not the $10m that he will make in 2018 as bonuses and guaranteed dollars get amortized. The Rams are projected to eat about $6.4m of the cost, freeing up $3.6m:

Per Spotrac, the Rams now sit on approximately $47.3m of cap space. With roughly $7m allocated for the draft class, the Rams will have about $40m of space to extend DL Aaron Donald or try to re-sign DB Lamarcus Joyner, WR Sammy Watkins, CB Trumaine Johnson, C John Sullivan and/or slot CB Nickell Robey-Coleman.

Let’s keep it going.

Go Rams.
