With this decision, WR Sammy Watkins will now become a free agent. The safety tag number for S LaMarcus Joyner is set at $11.29m for the 2018 season. The Rams Front office and Joyner’s reps have until July 16 to work out a multi-year deal.

ESPN beat writer Alden Gonzalez breaks down the agonizing decision that the Rams were forced to make with their prized free agents. My favorite line from the piece is: “Watkins is more of a luxury than a need, and he might have to take less money to remain with the Rams.”

Did Sammy Watkins tweet about his excitement for free agency? | Ramblin’ Fan

Sammy Watkins has an interesting (passive-aggressive) online presence, but this story makes sense. Sammy Watkins and Allen Robinson are going to be free agents very soon. Are the Rams and Jags going to regret this decision? The wide receiver tag for this year is listed at $15,982,000. I, for one, think the Rams made the smart play here. They tagged their most valuable defensive player behind Aaron Donald.

It’s one thing to lose a great player to free agency, it’s another thing when they remain in the NFC West, to the Niners no less. No thanks. But this does bring up the point that the Niners are going to make some splashy moves this off-season as they restock their receiving core. Will Sammy Watkins head for San Francisco?
