Given all the activity of the past few weeks, if there was one position I could see the Los Angeles Rams using free agency to address it would be inside linebacker. You don’t save a ton by going through the draft, and the quality of this FA crop is pretty high compared to the locked-in starters around the league. The Rams have already traded ILB Alec Ogletree to the New York Giants, and ILB Mark Barron could still stand as a salary cap casualty.
With that being said, here are a couple of names to keep in mind today.
Philadelphia Eagles ILB Nigel Bradham (re-signed)
Tennessee Titans ILB Avery Williamson (signed with New York Jets)
Dallas Cowboys ILB Anthony Hitchens (signed with Kansas CIty Chiefs)
New York Giants ILB Devon Kennard (signed with the Detroit Lions)
Jacksonville Jaguars ILB Paul Posluszny (retiring)
These guys are already off the market.
New York Jets ILB Demario Davis
Six seasons on, he’s still playing at a high level. Had a career high 97 tackles last season, though his stretch run was left wanting.
Denver Broncos ILB Todd Davis
Plus against the run, minus in the passing game. Would he fit alongside Barron even with the experience working under Defensive Coordinator Wade Phillips?
Washington ILB Zach Brown
He can move, though that gets him caught upfield sometimes. Maybe the highest upside of the group.
Buffalo Bills ILB Preston Brown
If he comes at the right price, might be the best overall value for contract of the group.
Detroit Lions ILB Tahir Whitehead
Versatile ILB who played on the outside as well for the Lions.
Chicago Bears ILB Jerrell Freeman
Stout, but a second infraction for PEDs might have something to do with it. Only played one game last year due to a concussion and openly spoke about possibly retiring due to the ramifications.
Oakland Raiders ILB NaVorro Bowman
Has likely seen his best days behind him, but could be a plus to work the run in rotation.
Arizona Cardinals ILB Karlos Dansby
If Grandpa Wade wants an assistant coach on the field in his linebacking corps much like OLB Connor Barwin last year, Dansby would make sense. Would be a big question mark over a 16-game season, though.
Kansas City Chiefs ILB Kevin Pierre-Louis
Tons of potential, though he hasn’t been asked to step up to starter level yet.
Indianapolis Colts ILB Jon Bostic
Revitalized his career with the Colts last year. Good value add.
The Rams could certainly wait for the market to shape up and pluck a guy later this week or even later in March, but I’d bet on one of these names coming to LA today.
Who would you want from this group, Rams fans?
