TST Staff's Final 2017 Los Angeles Rams Win-Loss Predictions

New, comments

One last time...

Los Angeles Rams helmet Jeff Hanisch-USA TODAY Sports

Time to do the damn thang.

The Los Angeles Rams2017 regular season kicks off on Sunday. Back in late April after the release of the Rams’ 2017 schedule, we put down our staff predictions. Now with just days before the Rams kick off against the Indianapolis Colts in Week 1, it’s time for a final win-loss prediction from everyone...

One asterisk note: go rams’ predictions aren’t included in the individual predictions. His prediction of the Rams going 16-0 is both wonderful and silly. Math is just wonderful, thus his predictions are not included until the final compilation.

The staff is nearly split on the McBae Bowl. If Week 1 is a must-win, is this any different? A hinge game at home before a two-game road swing with the narrative that’s going to come out of this?

Suffice to say, it should be high-motivation from the go.

Welp.

Worth considering the records all of us have the Rams through the first quarter of the season. Mule’s at the back at 1-3. Four of us, Bate, Hiller, Aucoin and seattle all have a 3-1 record. The majority of us are sitting on .500 heading toward the NFC West clash against Seattle. All things considered, .500 isn’t anything to flail at after four weeks. The problem is that the schedule seemingly gets much harder after this.

Consider that the consensus for each of the first three games is 15-0, 12-3 and 6-9...and yet only four have us putting up a 3-1 record. As we tweeted yesterday:

One of the hallmarks of the Fisherball era was being able to take down the NFC West leaders regardless of the quality of the Rams teams year-to-year. Clearly, we’re not buying on that this year. But then again, we rarely bought it under Fisher.

This is the kind of game where attitude and home field advantage can make a difference.

Can.

This one’s nearly unanimous.

It should be a good barometer for both teams. Both are likely headed to underwhelming seasons, though the Jags carry home field over our heads.

Honestly, I think this one is one of the harder games to predict. This could look much, much, much different by the time we get to early October than it does today.

Trips to London haven’t been friendly to the Rams who have yet to win overseas.

Last year, the Rams left for England directly from the previous week’s game. They spent the week practicing in England, visiting various tourist attractions and helping the NFL brand in London. The New York Giants stayed at home and practiced.

Specious? Perhaps. But results speak loudest.

Heading into the bye and taking stock of overall records:

  • 2-5 Haters: 2
  • 3-4 Skaters: 8
  • 4-3 Gators: 2
  • 5-2 Bate’rs: 3

Clearly, the 3-4 peak output is leading the way. But much like the outlook after Week 4, things look difficult here out. The likelihood is that if fans are angling for a winning season in 2017, they’ll need the 4-3 or 5-2 combined minority to ring true.

One random, random factor to consider with DE Aaron Donald holding out, CB Trumaine Johnson on his second consecutive franchise tag and WR Sammy Watkins, ILB Alec Ogletree, CB Lamarcus Joyner, OLB Connor Barwin and S Maurice Alexander all on expiring deals?

CB Janoris Jenkins.

The Rams didn’t want to pay him market value. So instead of taking a hometown discount, he left to join the Giants, make top dollar, put in a Pro Bowl season and make the playoffs. You think he has any regrets? You think the current Rams who played with him didn’t notice? Or that they haven’t kept in touch either directly or indirectly through their agents and/or intermediaries? You think at least one of them is looking at that and wondering if that might be the right call for them and their NFL careers?

I mentioned the Jacksonville game in Week 6 as a barometer game. This one should be as well. Barring catastrophe, its the 17th NFL start for QB Jared Goff, the first beyond a normal full season’s set of starts. It’s his 10th under Head Coach Sean McVay. It’s NOT the game immediately following the bye. It’s exactly the kind of game that you can hold up against early season contest to see who is getting better in the system and developing chemistry with one another and how things are sinking in.

Week 1 might be the biggest must-win. Week 3 as a classic rivalry might be the biggest want-win. Week 6 might be the biggest judge-win. This is the biggest growth-win.

That we’ve got it 9-6 against a Texans team that (a) made the playoffs last year and (b) made some strong additions suggests we’re buying in on some improvement in-season under McVay.

Sigh. The Minnesota freaking Vikings.

Since a win on New Year’s Eve in 2006, we’re 0-4 against the Vikes. It was the Vikes who in 2012 stopped a three-game winning streak effectively ending the 2012 Rams’ longshot playoff hopes. It was the Vikes who walloped the 2014 Rams in the first half leading to QB Shaun Hill getting pulled for a phantom injury (wink!) so that QB Austin Davis could take over. It was the Vikes who beat the 4-3 Rams a year later kicking off a five-game losing streak that buried QB Nick Foles and saw the ascendance of QB Case Keenum (Ron Howard voiceover: It did not work out).

Perhaps no team has played a more pivotal albeit sparsely pivotal role in the Rams fortunes in this decade than the Vikings.

What could that mean in Week 11? Clearly as a staff, we’re crossed up.

With QB Teddy Bridgewater placed on the PUP list, the Vikings are rolling with a QB depth chart of Sam Bradford and Case Keenum. If you felt like they’re trolling us, I’m not going to be able to dissuade you.

This feels perhaps more important than it will be, but maybe it’s supposed to?

Here’s your turn game.

The Rams come home against a New Orleans franchise coming off three successive 7-9 seasons that most think are headed toward a similar outcome in 2017. And yet, we’ve got a 4-11 consensus here.

The real issue? Three of the final five are road games and one of the two remaining home games is the game between the Rams and the Philadelphia Eagles pitting Goff against QB Carson Wentz, the two top picks of the 2016 NFL Draft and a clear marker about which franchise has taken the lead in making the most of their decision a year and a quarter (and a bit more) ago.

Forget the consensus. Consider that this was the breakout half (and we never got a breakout game) to hang our hats on Jared Goff on. How far has he come in a year? How far have the Rams come in a year? How far have they come in the single month since the bye week?

A tie? I tell you, that Elijah Kim is a miscreant and a ne’er-do-well.

This is three-quarter pole for the season. Let’s look at the record projections to this point:

  • 3-8-1: 1 (Eli!)
  • 4-8: 5
  • 5-7: 4
  • 6-6: 4
  • 7-5: 1 (Joey, you wily bastard)

Given those, consider this game. Joey has the Rams 7-4 going into this (CAN YOU IMAGINE). Two of the 6-6 predictors (Sosa and Theramsreport) have us going in 5-6 and winning this. The other four have us 6-5 and losing. The majority have us coming in with a losing record and leaving with a worse one. The question is one of despondency.

A 5-7 record is, barring miracle, the end. Anything worse has something more than a miracle required to save it.

What perhaps could save interest in the late season for Rams fans is perhaps the most important game of the season from afar.

Here it is. Jared Goff vs. Carson Wentz. The narrative here is inescapable.

One factor to consider? Of the 15 staffers who didn’t predict a 16-0 record, 10 of us have the Rams with a losing record going into this game. What will attendance be?

Part of the calculus here will be determined by what else is going on in the Los Angeles footballing world. Are the Los Angeles Chargers on a winning record? Do the USC Trojans or UCLA Bruins still carry attention by the end of their regular seasons and following their clash on November 17? If any of the three do, a Rams team on a losing record in Week 14 isn’t going to draw. And a Goff-Wentz battle with empty seats in Year 2 is going to bring quite a bit of mockery from NFL media circles...let alone what a loss would do.

Still, a majority of us have the Rams holding home and providing some hope that Goff could be on the ascendancy at this point meaning the Rams as a team would be as well.

Tim Godfrey is a lonely man.

Don’t be disheartened by the win-loss disparity here. It’s all about quality of performance. Consider that last year in Week 15, the Rams traveled to Seattle, dropped wide open passes, missed wide open touchdowns and got pantsed 3-24. What kind of Rams team do we see in Week 15? Is it the same on-field dysfunction with personnel changes due to performance and not injury, the same confusion on offense? Or are we seeing growth from the youth?

This is the last time we’ll face Seattle until 2018. This has a chance to be a trampoline game that catapults us into the meat of the McVay era, for better or worse.

Sorry, I’m not sorry. I’m the lone holdout here keeping the Rams from being a unanimous lock to close the season out on a winning note.

Performances here are likely to be listless. If either team is headed where the odds suggest, both Rams and 49ers fans (and the teams themselves) will be eager to just get the season over with.

  • 6-9-1: 1
  • 7-9: 4
  • 8-8: 3
  • 9-7: 1
  • 16-0: 1

So the bulk of the predictions are in that 6-10 to 8-8 range.

I’ve said all offseason this isn’t a win-now season. It’s McVay’s first year as head coach. Even if Eddie’s 5-11 prediction ends up being the accurate one, McBae’s not getting fired. He’s been hired to turn this franchise over the next few seasons.

So the record doesn’t matter as much this year as how we get there.

How does Jared Goff do in the second halves of games considering how abysmal he was in them last year?

How do we get the wins we do get? Last year, the Rams scored 9 points in half of their wins. Are we seeing more defensively-leveraged wins or is Goff able to lead the offense down the field late in 4th quarters a for a few wins?

How do the late season Rams look compared to the early season Rams? Do Goff and his targets find more consistency and production into late November and December compared to early September?

Who gets through the season unscathed? Does Goff start all 16 games or does the allure of the-grass-is-always-greener HSOTE offer a siren’s call? Does Father Time come calling for LT Andrew Whitworth? Do we see a regression to the mean on the injury front given last year’s fortunes on that front?

Does the home crowd show up for the Rams in full measure in the second season back in LA? Is the homecoming over? Has the local market apathy that affected attendance in the latter years in St. Louis (and the latter years for LA Rams 1.0) begin to manifest?

And what of the biggest Rams story in NFL circles - Aaron Donald? He certainly won’t lose a contract year. To avoid doing so, he’ll need to play in at least eight games. So if he shows up in Week 10...what happens? Does he play? Does it matter what the Rams’ record is? How does the team accept him? How does the media treat it? How do fans respond?

The 2017 Los Angeles Rams are a menu of unanswered questions, questions that once answered will give us a sense of the long-term trajectory for this franchise under its new coaching staff.

A glorious, gleaming palace lies on the horizon for the 2020 season. Until then, it’s up to Sean McVay, his staff and the roster to try and provide the first winning season for this franchise since 2003.

It begins now.
