Los Angeles Rams - San Francisco 49ers: Rookies Continue To Develop

The veterans shined bright in week 3 as the rookies continue to learn.

The Los Angeles Rams were in a shootout with the San Francisco 49ers up until the very end, hanging on for a 41-39 victory. With so many offensive points scored, one would likely assume that Cooper Kupp, Gerald Everett, and/or Josh Reynolds had a big impact on the game. However, that was not the case at all as the pair of Buffalo Bills Rams receivers each had over 100 yards.

WR Cooper Kupp

In a game where Sammy Watkins and Robert Woods received the lion’s share of targets, Kupp managed to catch both of his looks cleanly. Kupp still played in 60% of offensive snaps, third best out of wide receivers, which indicates that he still a big part of this offense. Look for a rebound game against a soft Dallas secondary.

TE Gerald Everett

Whether it be the thigh injury or play/comfort of Derek Carrier and Tyler Higbee, Everett failed to draw a target in the contest. Higbee took part of 61, or 91%, of the offensive snaps while Everett played in only 11, or 16%. Even Derek Carrier had more snaps (24) and caught a nice pass (17 yards). With the extra rest, look for Everett to be featured a little bit more.

Defensive Guys

The Rams defense has been a huge disappointment so far in the early season as teams have been able to move the ball at will. Of the rookies, DL Tanzel Smart led the way in playing time with 23, or 28%, of the snaps with Samson Ebukam with 12, or 15%. Smart finished with three tackles and John Johnson with two, albeit on special teams.

For the Dallas Game....

With the extra rest for the Dallas game, the Rams will likely be willing to use Gerald Everett a bit more. Tanzel Smart also looks to be in a good position to play more snaps with Ethan Westbrooks possibly being out after being arrested over the weekend.

Football is a game of ups and downs but this rookie class has been crucial in the 2-1 start. The future continues to be bright.
