Los Angeles Rams - Washington Redskins: Revisiting Matchups to Watch

New, comment

How did the key matchups impact the Rams 27-20 Loss to the Redskins?

NFL: Los Angeles Chargers at Los Angeles Rams Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

Late last week, I identified matchups to watch for the Rams week 2 home game against the Redskins. Let’s take a look back and see how those matchups impacted the game.

Aaron Donald vs ‘Football Shape’

While Donald didn’t make his usual impact on the game, he didn’t seem gassed at any point either. Not like Robert Quinn was at least.....

The Redskins offensive line largely had their way with the Rams defensive line on Sunday. Unfortunately that means that Donald was pretty well bottled up. He registered two tackles - one for a loss - and was this close to intercepting the pitch on Chris Thompson’s first TD. Given time, the AD of old will return for the Rams.

Sammy Watkins vs Josh Norman

Turns out Norman is the second highest paid CB in the NFL for a reason. He held Watkins to three catches on six targets for a paltry 33 yards. Between Watkins’ continual adjustment to the Rams offense and Norman’s All-Pro play, this turned out to be a pretty lopsided matchup in favor of the Redskins.

Kirk Cousins vs Wade Phillips’ Pass Rush

Five quarterback hits and two sacks. Not horrible numbers by any means, but the Rams were so busy getting thrashed in the ground game that it didn’t matter much. As mentioned above, Washington’s offensive line held the advantage all day over what looked to be an overmatched Rams defense. This was NOT a good look for the Rams - especially when you consider that this is supposed to be the strength of this years team.
