A year and a quarter ago, the Los Angeles Rams traded with the Tennessee Titans to move up to the #1 overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft to select Cal QB Jared Goff.
Now with rookies reporting to training camp today and the preseason and regular season fast approaching, one SB Nation writer thinks the Rams could be in the mix for the #1 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft and thus in the mix to select yet another quarterback:
The Rams are unlikely to be interested in a quarterback for the same reason it would be a surprise if the Bears took another. But if Jared Goff leads Los Angeles to the NFL’s worst record in 2017, it’s not out of the realm of possibility. The No. 1 pick in 2016 struggled in his limited time as a starter and the team was winless in his seven starts.
No team scored fewer points or gained fewer yards than the Rams last season. Unless wide receiver Cooper Kupp and/or tight end Gerald Everett burst on to the scene as rookies, Goff doesn’t have a wealth of tools to work with, either. Maybe the teachings of Sean McVay will do wonders, but it looks like it could be another rough year for the Rams.
We’ll see how the 2017 season goes, but if the Rams are anywhere near the top of the draft order again next year, I’m not sure there’s a path to that outcome that doesn’t involve Jared Goff failing miserably this year. And if that happens, Jeff Fisher won’t be available to blame.
