ESPN Ranks LA Rams QB Sean Mannion Among Worst Backup QB Situations

Despite what Eric Dickerson thinks, the Rams backup isn’t viewed favorably.....

NFL: Los Angeles Rams-Minicamp Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

Despite Eric Dickerson’s pleas for the Los Angeles Rams to start Sean Mannion ahead of Jared Goff, the folks at ESPN (Insider subscription required) believe that the Rams have the 2nd worst backup quarterback situation in the NFL (or just outside the top 30).

31. Los Angeles Rams

The Rams are fully invested in a youth movement at quarterback and have just two arms on the roster: last year's No. 1 overall pick, Jared Goff, and 2015 third-round pick Sean Mannion, who has attempted only six passes in two seasons. The key to this franchise will be how Goff ascends in his second season and beyond. He needs to improve greatly under new coach Sean McVay.

Jared Goff seems to be firmly entrenched as the starter. However, with a 0-7 career record and pessimism around the league, it also makes it painful to think that the backup situation isn’t idea as well.

This article seems to have been written before the signing of Dan Orlovsky (roster preview here). With Orlovsky in the fold, the Rams will likely wear out the old man during the camp while saving the high-level reps for Goff. Either way, the Rams QB situation is still in flux.
