2017 Rams Roster Preview: CB Aarion Penton And Promise

Maybe Penton’s rookie season can resemble E.J Gaines’?

If you were a fan of how former Missouri Tigers and current Los Angeles Rams CB E.J. Gaines performed in his rookie season, than you will likely be hoping for the same from the rookie UDFA CB from Mizzou, Aarion Penton. As the Rams change defensive schemes, their ever-changing DB room continues to bring talent through the doors. Penton could very well be next in line as a rookie surprise.

Roster Battle

The DB room (notice how I said DB) is a bit of a confusing one. With multiple players likely playing multiple roles, it’s hard to know exactly what Defensive Coordinator Wade Phillips has planned for all these guys, but if we’re being safe, it’s certain that Trumaine Johnson, Kayvon Webster, Lamarcus Joyner, and even John Johnson (if you consider him a CB) are locks for the 53. That leaves 1 or 2 spots open for returning guys like Gaines, Mike Jordan, Troy Hill, a free agent addition in Nickell Robey-Coleman, and even a rookie UDFA like Aarion Penton.

Expectations

Expect to see a fiesty rookie CB who can play outside of the numbers or can kick into the slot. The position flexibility allows Penton to work towards a spot on the 53 man roster. With 10 interceptions in his college career with 5 coming last year alone, Penton is a ball-hawking CB who turns into a WR when the ball is in the air.

Chances of Making Final Roster (5/10)

Penton was paid a large amount by the Rams as a priority UDFA, so that obviously tells us they are high on him. I expect him to battle for a roster spot, and could very well edge up guys like Hill, Jordan, and maybe even Gaines.
