The Los Angeles Rams will get into the 2017 NFL Draft action tonight with the fifth pick in both the second and third round. I thought it relevant just to take a look at what the Rams have done in the Day rounds under General Manager Les Snead (with the obvious asterisk being that all five previous drafts under Snead also occured with Jeff Fisher as head coach and any supposed correlation could be severed now with new Head Coach Sean McVay at the helm).
Second Round
LA Rams NFL Draft Round 2 Results, 2012-16
Year | Pk (Rd) | Pk (Ovr) | Player | POS | School |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Year | Pk (Rd) | Pk (Ovr) | Player | POS | School |
2012 | 1 | 33 | Brian Quick | WR | Appalachian St. |
2012 | 7 | 39 | Janoris Jenkins | CB | North Alabama |
2012 | 18 | 50 | Isaiah Pead | RB | Cincinnati |
2014 | 9 | 41 | Lamarcus Joyner | S | Florida St. |
2015 | 25 | 57 | Rob Havenstein | OT | Wisconsin |
Yes, the RGIII trade-driven trio at the top looms over everything. Had Brian Quick developed into the WR1 we had hoped and Isaiah Pead settled the RB position as the athlete to pair with a future wrecking ball (Zac Stacy?), things certainly would have gone differently in the drafts since. Alas.
That gap from the 2013 NFL Draft is due to the trade up to select WR Tavon Austin which also doesn’t suffer from much glory in the aftermath.
Jenkins is the clear bannerholder, though having opted to let him exit via free agency a year ago it’s perhaps not the most comfortable pick to hang your hat on.
With Joyner reportedly moving to safety (half-moving?) and Havenstein sliding over to right guard (temporarily?), those picks could look much different by season’s end.
Third Round
LA Rams NFL Draft Round 3 Results, 2012-16
Year | Pk (Rd) | Pk (Ovr) | Player | POS | School |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Year | Pk (Rd) | Pk (Ovr) | Player | POS | School |
2012 | 2 | 65 | Trumaine Johnson | CB | Montana |
2013 | 9 | 71 | T.J. McDonald | S | USC |
2014 | 11 | 75 | Tre Mason | RB | Auburn |
2015 | 8 | 72 | Jamon Brown | OL | Louisville |
2015 | 25 | 89 | Sean Mannion | QB | Oregon St. |
Welp.
Tru’s on a confusing second consecutive franchise tag. McDonald is out via free agency. Mason is out via free spirit. Brown is out via free fall. And HSOTE Sean Mannion is out via free space.
There’s a chance that come Week 2018 the only player on this list still with the Rams is Jamon Brown, a backup offensive lineman.
The Rams are, barring something rather shocking, adding a name to each list tonight. If they are going to help reverse the fortunes of the franchise, they’ll need to be looked at in a more positive light four years from now than much of these lists.
How do you feel about tonight after looking at our recent Day 2 history?
