ESPN’s Alden Gonzalez is reporting that longtime Los Angeles Rams OL Rodger Saffold is staying put for 2017:
Yes, by the way, Rodger Saffold is staying. He is not expected to be a cap casualty. Rams' best offensive lineman last year.
— Alden Gonzalez (@Alden_Gonzalez) March 9, 2017
There was some thought that Saffold could be released with just two years remaining on his contract he signed in 2014. Saffold would offer north of $4.3m in cap room this year with just $2m in dead space with $6.5m in available room for 2018 and just $1m in dead space. Throw in the injury history for Saffold, who turns 29-years old in June, and there was reason to suspect the Rams could decide the time to move on would have been now.
With the news that the Rams are set to sign former Cincinatti Bengals OT Andrew Whitworth when the 2017 NFL free agency market opens today at 4pm ET, we’ve already got some shifting roles on the offensive line especially as it pertains to 2014 NFL Draft #2 overall pick Greg Robinson:
Rams' potential offensive line for 2017 ...
— Alden Gonzalez (@Alden_Gonzalez) March 9, 2017
LT: Whitworth
LG: Saffold
C: Barnes (for now)
RG: Robinson
RT: Havenstein
Could be decent.
Plenty more to come today. Stay tuned.
