What Teams Could The LA Rams Be Shopping CB Trumaine Johnson To? (UPDATED)

Who is Les on the phone with?

News broke less than an hour ago that the Los Angeles Rams are “in discussions” to trade CB Trumaine Johnson. As NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport explained on air:

So much of what the Rams are doing is about building and they would be able to get a significant draft-pick haul for one of the top corners in the game," Rapoport told NFL Network. "Right now they are weighing their options, trying to see what is out there for Trumaine Johnson and for the Rams.

So who’s out there that could be interested in Tru and could conceivably send “a significant draft-pick haul” our way in the 2017 NFL Draft?

Cleveland Browns

This is the first one that springs to mind. The Browns just hired former Rams Defensive Coordinator Gregg Williams who coached Tru for the last three seasons. The Browns have a ridiculous $100m of cap space to start shelling out this offseason. They’ve also got a league-high 11 picks in the draft to cobble together a package from.

Easily the favorite here.

Cap space: ~$102m

Draft picks: #1 overall (1st round, #1 pick in the round), #12 (1st, #12), #33 (2nd, #1), #52 (2nd, #20), #65 (3rd, #1), #108 (4th, #1), #142 (4th, #35), #145 (5th, #1), #175 (5th, #31), #181 (5th, #37), #185 (6th, #1)

Tennessee Titans

The Titans are flush with draft capital thanks to the trade with the Rams for the #1 overall pick from the 2016 NFL Draft, and they’ve got a huge need at CB. For two teams that have been inextricably linked ever since Mike Jones made The Tackle in Super Bowl XXXIV, this would be yet another overlap of their destinies.

Cap space: ~$61m

Draft picks: #5 (1st, #5), #18 (1st, #18), #83 (3rd, #19), #100 (3rd, #36), #125 (4th, #18), #164 (5th, #20), #214 (6th, #30), #236 (7th, #18)

Jacksonville Jaguars

The Jags were one of the teams mentioned in that NFL link with the quote from Rapoport.

They’ve got the money, the need and the picks. But are they comfortable giving up draft capital right now? It’d be a bad decision IMO, but hey, NFL teams are allowed to make bad decisions. I know a team that has made plenty of em...

Cap space: ~$75m

Draft picks: #4 (1st, #4), #35 (2nd, #3), #68 (3rd, #4), #110 (4th, #3), #148 (5th, #4), #187 (6th, #3), #222 (7th, #4)

Buffalo Bills

The Rams. The Browns. The Jaguars. The Bills. Basement brethren from the last decade...and yet all four make obvious sense.

They’re cap-tied right now, but they’ve got plenty of room moving forward beyond 2017. They’ve also got come cuts they could make to ease some space open.

Cap space: ~$20m

Draft picks: #10 (1st, #10), #44 (2nd, #12), #75 (3rd, #10), #75 (3rd, #10), #156 (5th, #12), #171 (5th, #27), #195 (6th, #11)

What other teams do you think could be in play? What draft picks would be necessary to pull off a deal? Could the Rams get a 2nd-round plus one?

Well, it “sounds” like the Browns aren’t the lead dog:
