All’s well that ends well.

The 2017 NFL Scouting Combine closes out today with free agency looming this week and pro days coming up with the 2017 NFL Draft on the horizon. In case you need it, here’s the incredibly deep schedule:

2017 NFL Scouting Combine - Day 7 Schedule

Group Status

Group 10 (DB), Group 11 (DB) On-Field Workout (timing, stations, skill drills)
  • With Los Angeles Rams S T.J. McDonald reportedly set to leave as a free agent, this safety class takes a bit more impetus. The big unanswered question is one of system - what kind of roles does new Defensive Coordinator want his safeties to fill? Can anyone currently on the roster be expected to execute those roles?
  • The only three safeties I’m confident will be gone before the Rams get on the board with the 37th overall pick are Michigan S Jabrill Peppers, LSU S Jamal Adams and Ohio St. S Malik Hooker. After that, it should be open to the board.
  • The question then becomes one of where the talent lines up with the value. I’m not sure anyone outside of Washington S Budda Baker would meet the value for a second-round pick or even the Rams’ third-round selection at #69. That leaves Day 3 as the optimum space for a safety if need be.
  • I’ve gotten this far and haven’t even brought up cornerbacks, largely because by tagging Trumaine Johnson for a second consecutive season, the Rams are overspent at the position for 2017. Some Day 3 talent may be in order which may make more sense as this CB class looks very, very deep.
