Free Agent RB Lance Dunbar to Visit L.A. Rams

Dunbar offers major versatility as a receiving back

NFL: Dallas Cowboys at San Francisco 49ers Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports

Per Adam Caplan from ESPN:

Lance Dunbar was an un-drafted RB who caught on with the Dallas Cowboys in 2012. He made his lasting in the NFL by offering major versatility as well as an innate ability to come out of the backfield and catch the ball as a receiving back.

This is a major hole for the Rams because newly appointed HC and OC Sean McVay loves to use his RB out of the backfield to setup easy mis-matches that can be exploited for easy and big yardage at times. In his final season in Washington, McVay used Chris Thompson as his receiving back and ultimately Thompson caught 49 receptions for 350 yards.

Back to Dunbar... He was beginning to carve out a nice role in the Cowboys offense until a major knee injury which tore his ACL, MCL and patellar tendon derailed his season. Dunbar returned in 2016 to have a very quiet year, though he still offers major ability to not only spell Todd Gurley at times, but to certainly find himself given a few receptions per game. In his 5 year career, Lance Dunbar has 422 rushing yards, 68 receptions, and 646 receiving yards.
