Los Angeles Rams rookie S John Johnson, aka Johnny John Jon Johnson Johnstone aka J5, is one of five nominees for the NFL Pepsi Rookie of the Week Award for Week 5 for his performance in the Rams’ 10-16 loss to the Seattle Seahawks.
Johnson, a third-round pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, picked up his first career start on Sunday in replace of S Maurice Alexander, a healthy scratch on the inactives. Less than 24 hours later, Alexander was no longer a Ram as he was released for WR Mike Thomas coming off of his four-game suspension. While he played admirably in defense with three tackles an a pair of pass deflections, it was his interception and subsequent very nice 69-yard return that landed him on the nominee list.
Here are the other Pepsi Rookie of the Week Award nominees for Week 5:
- Jacksonville Jaguars RB Leonard Fournette: Dominated the ground game with 28 carries for 181 yards and a pair of touchdowns to help Jacksonville down the Pittsburgh Steelers with ease, 30-9.
- Houston Texans QB Deshaun Watson: For the second time in three weeks, Watson shined in a losing effort against a superior opponent. Two weeks ago, Watson was nominated for topping 300 yards with two touchdowns in a three-point loss on the road against the New England Patriots. This weekend, Watson single-handedly decided a ton of fantasy matchups with his five touchdown effort against the Kansas City Chiefs that amazingly wasn’t enough as KC won, 42-34.
- Cleveland Browns DE Myles Garrett: Tallied two sacks in his NFL debut in the Browns’ three-point loss to the New York Jets.
- Green Bay Packers RB Aaron Jones: Put up 125 yards and scored a touchdown in his first NFL start in what would be an Aaron Rodgers-led win over the Dallas Cowboys, 35-31.
