Per Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio, Les Snead is in a “tenuous” situation in Los Angeles, as he is potentially interviewing a head coach who could be eyeing his replacement.
As one league source explained it, Snead’s situation remains tenuous. Ultimately, his role (and his employment) will depend on who they hire to be the coach — and how much power the coach has.
To date, the Rams have been interviewing assistants who currently are working with other teams. Typically, those candidates are less likely to make sweeping demands regarding personnel power and/or the degree of influence to be exercised by people already in place. For the Rams, the two biggest names to watch as it relates to the interplay with the new coach are Snead and COO Kevin Demoff.
While it is odd that Snead is also in the room with COO Kevin Demoff, Snead may be careful on who he recommends for the head coaching vacancy as he may decide on someone who would oust him at first notice.
Honestly, as a fan of the Rams who just went through a near five year experience of nepotism, any move that results in Snead staying put will make me wonder if a side deal was arranged to get that person hired.
With the first domino falling with Doug Marrone getting the head coaching job in Jacksonville, look for teams to start scrambling to fill vacancies within a couple of days.
