Report: Rams To Sign Former Chargers CB Steve Williams, Cut LB Nic Grigsby (UPDATED)

NFL Media's Ian Rapoport is reporting the Los Angeles Rams will sign former San Diego Chargers CB Steve Williams:

Williams, a fifth-round pick for the Chargers in the 2013 NFL Draft, slowly crept up the CB depth chart after missing all of his rookie season after a pec injury in the 2013 preseason. Williams started two games for the Chargers last year in Pro Football Focus’ sixth-best cornerback group in the NFL. The Chargers waived him this week.

Williams would seemingly join a quintet of E.J. Gaines, Troy Hill, Trumaine Johnson, Lamarcus Joyner and Coty Sensabaugh...unless Williams’ arrival is meant to supplant one of those names. Until we hear otherwise, I’m hesitant to speculate on that front. Considering that just two days ago the Rams brought back DT Cam Thomas while making room for him by cutting OL David Arkin, it’s not a a fair conclusion to assume Williams would take the place of one of the other cornerbacks.

As it stands, the Rams are adding some secondary depth with a trip to face the San Francisco 49ers on Monday.

So there were a couple of moves to report today after this news leaked.

Williams will take a roster slot from LB Nic Grigsby.

Additionally, OL David Arkin, who was waived to make room for DT Cam Thomas, went to the practice squad squeezing Terrence Magee out of his PS roster spot. I’d expect Grigsby to head to the PS assuming he clears waivers. Not sure who’s at the bottom of the PS depth chart after Magee.
