The 2016 college football season has already been one of turnover and unanticipated developments.
Today should be no different.
Here are the major matchups:
#12 Georgia (3-0) at #23 Ole Miss (1-2) - 12:00pm ET, ESPN
The Bulldogs have started the Kirby Smart era 3-0...but just barely. Their three wins over North Carolina, Nicholls State and Missouri have come by a combined 12 points. That’s living dangerously. They’re facing their most talented opponent yet today on the road, so there’s reason to think Georgia could come undone. Georgia’s now fully behind freshman QB Jacob Eason. With RB Nick Chubb powering a very young offense, Georgia could be building a special season out even as they target 2017 as the come-up.
Ole Miss, on the other hand, is struggling in their first build-back year. With LT Laremy Tunsil, WR Laquon Treadwell and DT Robert Nkemdiche all in the NFL now having headlined the Rebs’ banner recruiting class of 2013 that revitalized the program under HC Hugh Freeze, Mississippi is in a bit of a holding pattern. There’s still plenty of NFL talent, though. QB Chad Kelly, TE Evan Engram, WR Damore'ea Stringfellow, OLB/DE Marquis Haynes all could factor early in the 2017 NFL Draft.
#11 Wisconsin (3-0) at #8 Michigan St. (2-0) - 12:00pm ET, Big Ten Network
Wisconsin Head Coach has managed his team well over his first year plus, but the real issue is talent. Wisconsin is falling in the recruiting game, though, so a game like this is more than just a mark on the schedule. For a top prospect like WR Donovan Peoples-Jones coming out of Detroit, this is the kind of game that could make a defining difference.
Michigan State, on the other hand, is Michigan State. There’s always NFL talent on defense (hi, DT Malik McDowell). There’s always linebacking talent (ILB Riley Bullough is of course unavoidable). And having fed the NFL three running backs since the 2012 NFL Draft headlined by Le’Veon Bell, you know there’s talent out of the backfield (Jeff Fisher is going to be so tempted when RB L.J. Scott declares). If MSU can hold home field, they’re going to start making waves nationally even without the QB talent to match recent NFL offerings in Connor Cook and Kirk Cousins.
#19 Florida (3-0) at #14 Tennessee (3-0) - 3:30pm ET, CBS
Florida’s defense is going to be a unit combed through heavily heading into the draft. CB Jalen “Teez” Tabor, DT Caleb Brantley, FS Marcus Maye, LB Jarrad Davis and DE Bryan Cox, Jr. All five could factor in the first two rounds.
And yet, here Tennessee is with talent and expectations and pressure...and the hope of beating UF for the first time in more than a decade. Eyes will gravitate toward QB Joshua Dobbs and RB Jalen Hurd, but Tennessee’s defensive trio of DE Derek Barnett, CB Cameron Sutton and LB Jalen Reeves-Maybin might all come first in the draft.
More to come in a bit.
